ExiledInIllinois
...Is that it is being bypassed and underutilized! This is the season, fall snowbird season, here in Chicago where all the big pleasure boats head south for the winter. They do the fall and winter seasons of The Great Loop in warmer/ice free weather. Many start in the spring along the east coast... New Jersey, The Carolinas, Florida, the Caribbean, you name it etc... These boats head north and hit NYC, the Hudson and the Erie Canal. I have talked to many boaters through the years and the last couple of days and very few of them go through BFLO! This happens year in and year out. They almost all opt for the Richelieu River/Chambly Canal (Hudson to Lake Champlain/St. Lawrence) or the first part of the Erie Canal and then Lake Ontario (via Oswego Canal) and on to the Trent-Severn Canal through Ontario to Lake Huron (Georgian Bay)... Totally bypassing BFLO. In my 20+ years here observing yachters trek the "Great Loop" very few boats have opted to go the Erie Canal via BFLO-Lake Erie-Detroit-Lake Huron route. Do you blame them? Even the Lake Ontario via Welland/Erie route is a seldom use choice for small boats. Every boat I supsect that is doing The Loop... I ask... Every year I get the nada to BFLO. It is kinda depressing and the trend in 2013 is very much the same as past years. Honestly, there would be money for the economy in bringing this kinda summer tourism to the WNY region... ?? BFLO is on The Great Loop map, it is just not being used! Yet, Ontario and pretty scenary win out! Can you blame them? Buffalo must tie this into their waterfront development plans! http://en.wikipedia....wiki/Great_loop
