I have to go with Aaron Curry. Everyone thought that he'd be a stud, and at the time many said that he was actually the best player but didn't deserve to go #1 overall because of his position (LB). How could such a great college player with such great measurables flop so badly? He was far more highly touted than, say, Maybin.

He retired from the NFL last Wednesday (August 28).

I think, in order to judge who might be the biggest bust, you have to take into consideration things like:

- draft slot, so guys selected #1 overall have more "bust" impact than a guy drafted #10

- position, so guys who play QB probably have more "bust" impact than, say, an OL

- hype coming out of the draft, so guys judged as "can't miss" have more "bust" impact than less heralded players (probably related to the first item above)

- how long the guy's career was, so a guy who flames out after 3 years is more of a bust than, say, a guy who lingers around the league, however unproductively, for 7 years

- some important stats, like games started, impact plays (TDs), and such, even if there weren't many

- injuries, and the part they played in reducing impact/shortening his career

I think there was a good thread on this during the offseason discussing the biggest Bills draft bust, which touched on some of these issues.

Given all of that, Curry has to be very high on that list, given his draft hype, lack of impact, and short career. A guy like Mandarich would qualify as well, but you could say that he lingered around the league longer than some (didn't he come back after time away from the league?). I still think Leaf has got to be near the top of the list as well.

JaMarcus Russell... And Al Davis.

It has to be Russell, to be out of the league entirely in 3 years is amazing. Even Ryan Leaf (and any other 1st round QB bust) was given a 2nd chance by some other team after busting with their original team. The added bust factor on Russell is that they gave up on him without a significant injury being the cause.

Jamarcus certainly should be at the top. The Raiders at this point have paid him close to 40 mil for sucking for a few seasons.

and because it was so much more predictable i think it gets bonus points.

no that's two busts, and while both are wonderful no way are they the "biggest" - seriously

Well let's see some bigger!

I kept it to the last half decade. Russell was drafted seven years ago.

Yah. Wasn't quite half a decade. But it was close since he was drafted prior to 2007 season start (6 years) ;-)
