strike out lol

lay it on me

C'mon. Now you're just being obstinate. If we're talking about culture for the masses--what's wrong with a lot of TV, particularly series that have been on HBO?

What about the entire medium of improv comedy?

How about the Internet? Facebook?

Blues music and rock and roll?

The American automobile?

Jesus, you didn't even bother to include Vonnegut!

You really don't think this country has produced anything that's culturally significant since the mid-20th century?

Are the films of Steven Spielberg to low brow for your taste? What about Wes Anderson?

How bout writers like DJ Pancake? Michael Chabon? Tim O'Brien?

What about Paul Simon? Bob Dylan?

There's a whole thread going right now about "good rap music." Jazz counts but rap/hip hop cannot?

You called me Grandpa and said there has been much culture since the 60s- then proceeded to list Simon, Dylan, Vonnegot, Blues(I am huge fans of all and agree they are American culture-my list wasn't comprehensive), and the automobile. The internet was created by CERN and is hardly American. And Facebook is the ultimate "look at me" sight and hardly something I am proud of over. I will give you Spielberg. And comedy- Hicks, Carlin, Pryor. What else you got? I raise you Karate Kid 3, Supersize, high fructuse corn syrup, and Rebecca Black

American culture to me is Walt Whitmann, F Scott Fitzgerald and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Louis Armstrong, Miles and Trane. Keruac, Bukowski, and Wolfe. Orson Wells, Chaplin and Keaton. Timothy O'Sullivan, Ansel Adams, and Jackson Pollock. Jazz, Baseball, National Parks,

Today is seems American culture is corporate pop stars, tramp stamps, self absorbed selfish people who like to take and post pictures of themselves- and flash hand signs. What the !@#$ happened to this country? Do people have character anymore?

Amen. When people get paid for name dropping products on talk shows and become more famous due to committing crimes or falling into degenerate behavior it is pretty sad.

Kate is keeping it real. She is sexy as hell eating a burger. She is sexy as hell when she sneezes. She does not need to go to extravagant lengths to try and sell that she is sexy. And I don't know much about her character. I just enjoy looking at her

So they're only a corporate shill/whore if they're not sexy to you. Ok, got it.

Okay, I'll concede The Internet for the technical reasons you mentioned. And poo poo Facebook/Twitter all you want, but they've created substantive international social and cultural changes. Shallow though they were, political ones too (Arab Spring). And while CERN gave us The Internet, America gave the world Amazon, EBay, Wikipedia, Google, YouTube and Napster (I mention Napster because it single-handedly turned the music economy on its ear).

Not to mention, there's a reason why Apple (world's most powerful/valuable brand) has products on display in museums.

And sure, for the most part we eat like idiots. But we're also producing celebrity chefs and food concepts at an outrageous clip right now. We've also been home to the "Best restaurant in the world" (Alinea, Chicago). As a Chicagoan, I must interject the importance of food in our culture. As this is a Buffalo-centric message board, it's something most here could/should understand. It aint all Ho-Ho's and Lucky Charms, but I get your point.

You mention baseball, but gloss over other uniquely American sporting cultures like football, anything pertaining to college sports (not least of which: March Madness), and the fact that we continue to kick the world's ass in the Summer Olympics.

Just because you might not "get" other things like video games, doesn't mean they aren't culturally significant, too. Newer games like BioShock Infinite are pushing the boundaries for what an entire medium can do.

We also have guys like Tracy Letts writing some DAMN good plays right now.

I mentioned it briefly, but shows like The Wire, Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, we're in a television renaissance right now.

Music: yeah, I dug a little deep, but you completely ignored hip-hop. Again, an entire GENRE born and perfected here in the United States. We also have contemporary bands doing great things with styles of yore--guys like Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks (though he benefits from some pretty sweet lineage).

How about experiential culture like amusement parks and festivals? Our country is lousy with those!

I understand we had some pretty big cultural breakthroughs in the first half of the 20th Century. But we live in such a fragmented age right now that it's bogus to say "nothing" has happened since The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan. If Ed was up against 1,000 other channels, YouTube, video games, and the entire Internet at large, I think we'd be a bit less romantic for how we perceive the cultural "significance" of events that happened during a time when not a lot of options existed.

nice non-sequitor logic there. Miley is whore because her performance. Miley is a shill because she is a product of Disney and Viacom. I know little about Kate. LIke I said I think she is sexy. I don't know if she has character. And I don't know who her employer is. I just think she is sexy.

And yes fast food is garbage- and McDonalds, PIzza Hut etc are polluting the planet and destroying local cultures. I don't eat at any fast food places- only local places. Mostly I cook with vegetables from my garden.

Solid post. Fair enough.

The internet is the greatest invention and world changing. Yes Twitter helped spawn Arab Spring. And Ebay, Apple, Wikipedia, are great. Amazon is convenient, although I fear it is Walmart like and destoying local ma and pa stores. Alinea is awesome. I am a chef, and Grant Achatz is one of my favorites. The American palate has come along way. Chicago has an incredible food scene Tru, Frontera Grill, Topolobampo, Charlie Trotters. Football is biggest sport in this country now. Hip Hop is american, as are Punk, Techno, Motown, Disco, Bluegrass. I don't watch TV- but hear great things about all the shows you have mentioned. And Robert Randolph and Trucks are excellent.

So we agree on all the above. But I just don't get Jersey Shore, Jerry Springer or Paris Hilton

So sticking your ass in the camera as you climb in the trunk of a car while shilling for a fast food company that (these are your words) puts out garbage food, pollutes the planet and destroys local cultures is cool, hot and sexy to you? One man's sexy is another man's skank. Once again it's so hard not to be a hypocrite when you're a socialist hippy.

The only thing more shocking than her performance is the fact that people still watch and talk about MTV, or any of the little Disney twats that screech into an auto tuner.

If video killed the radio star, what killed the video star?

Easy. MTV. Kind of a Frankenstein thing.

Nor I.

I would, however, like to believe we're approaching an impasse between the Honey Boo Boo fans and the people who want to kill the Honey Boo Boo fans for perpetuating unfettered idiocy. I honestly believe the number of people identifying with the latter is slowly beginning to outnumber the former, and a revolution will soon be at hand!

She's not a good twerker, either. She's really not a good anything.

Anyway, the best way I can describe twerking is this:

Bending over with legs further than shoulder width apart.

Moving nothing but your ass, as fast as you can, side to side.

It's not side to side. It's moving the ass up and down. lol.

My god this derailed quickly. In 20 years let's revisit these two. They're freaking 20 years old. They just have to look pretty. If I want women with substance I go for an older woman. But when I want some fun - 20 is about as fun as it gets. Cut them some slack.

I don't care how good looking someone is. If she's shilling for something I really disagree with she all of a sudden becomes very ugly to me. But that's me. You talk a great talk.
