I've started a new topic because there are separate threads on Leinart, Kolb, and Lewis and I'd like to see an overall discussion of what folks think will happen next.

There are currently five QBs on the roster; one would think they will keep three on the final 53.

The QB hurt most by what happened this weekend is, in my opinion, none other than Jeff Tuel. Had Tuel led some drives and put some points on the board, I think Buffalo would have acquired either Leinart or Lewis, but probably not both. Unfortunately, though, the offense was essentially impotent with Tuel at the helm. I now believe he is destined for the PS, because he's not ready to perform on the big stage.

I'm guessing Kolb is finished as a Bill (if not permanently). Does Buffalo really want to occupy a roster spot with a QB who may or may not recover from concussion symptoms, particularly when he wasn't playing very well when healthy? Do they have an option to place him on PUP without counting against the number? If so, that might also be an option, and they can reassess in 6 weeks.

So -- I believe the three Bills QBs on the active roster to begin the season September 8 will be EJ, Leinart, and Lewis. In Lewis they have a guy with a lot of athletic ability as well as a live arm. He would come closest to being an EJ "clone" who could do the same kinds of things if he had to play (i.e., you don't have to change the gameplan much). I live in the Durham/Chapel Hill area and I remember Lewis slinging it around the ACC. Leinart strikes me as more of a "manager" at this stage of his career but who knows how his attitude has changed since being unceremoniously dumped from the league. If he now understands the need to work, perhaps he has a bit of a rebirth. People do occasionally grow up and mature. At this point, however, you can't count on much from him.

One thing both Lewis and Leinart have going for them is they're smart guys, but neither is going to be ready to start on week one; they are merely insurance policies. EJ is coming back.

Thoughts?

I think Lewis is here to run the scout team so Tuel and Leinart can get ready ASAP.

I don't think Kolb can go to the Pup list. If they are truly concerned about his health, I think its IR for him. EJ or Leinart will start week one.

I just have to disagree with you on the Tuel point. They obviously don't think he's ready, but his play in the Skins game was the product, not the cause. They called the same plays over and over because they didn't want to risk his or any other players health. He wasn't out there to score, just run out the clock and figure out what to do about the QB situation.

They also would have gotten at least 3 points if Stevie didn't fumble. That was a good pass.

I'll be shocked -SHOCKED, I say!- if EJ isn't starting against NE*. The addition of Lewis tells me he's a fit for Hacketts offense, where Leinhart is a 'Kolb' (experienced game manager) to be used in emergency, should injuries derail the fast pace O.

Kolb to IR or PUP

Tuel cut -PS if available afterward

Lewis #2

Leinhart #3

EJ Manuel era starts Sunday, September 8th.

Tuel has a shot to make the roster, because he has the most experience running the offense. I agree with the Captain, Lewis is here to probably run the scout team in practice.

I agree with this..I thought even while at he game they just wanted to get out with Tuel intact.

My guess, and purely guess

3 QB s on the 53

Manuel

Tuel

Leinart

Lewis on the PS.

Kolb goes to IR and then released in the offseason. PUP is a training camp/offseason spot. Once your in camp you can't be placed on it.

EJ will start week 1. Kolb and Tuel are history. I think we are in for a very rough year my friends with very few bright spots ( only when we play the JETS). Might be hard to watch this year even for a die hard fan.

Based on what? The Redskins game? I love the doom and gloom on this board. Brings me a laugh almost every time. Why don't we see how things shake out after about four weeks of the regular season before we throw in the towel? That should give us a little more of an idea of how good this team is than three pre-season games.

I think Tuel will stay only because he's that familiar with the offense and has played good 2 of the last 3 weeks.

I think that Leinart obviously makes it as the #2 with either Lewis or Tuel as #3 and the other to the PS. Manuel would have been #1 regardless of the Kolb situation.

I feel they grabbed Leinhart for vet purposes only and if a better vet QB get's cut in the next 2 weeks the Bills will re-assess the QB situation...so depending on what cuts are made by other teams, I wouldn't be surprised to see Leinhart cut before the season starts or at least after week1 at the latest...Leinhart has failed everywhere he's played, I would much rather they go with different vet...as far as Tuel, I think right now he is the #1 if EJ isn't ready...Tuel is the only other QB that knows the WR's and the offense well enough to start week 1...

Whether or not Tuel makes it to the opening day roster is not bases so much on his play this last game as it is two other items: 1. Can EJ go opening day without risking a more serious injury. & 2. How quick can either Leinhart or Lewis learn the offense and can they be ready to play week 1. Tuel does not look close to ready to be a starting QB in this league. He may get there, but he's not there now. As far as the Bills trying to just finish the game and not trying to score, that does not jive with the fact that the Bills put Spiller back out on the field after injuring his knee.

This though I would say we need to go deeper into the season to see what we have. This will be a very young roster.

I agree with this. Leinart is going to be the odd man out. I think we go into the season with Manuel, tuel, and Lewis all on the 53-man roster.

maybe they grab another young QB after cuts to sign to the PS.

That statement is 100% true. You could almost see Marrone going tick, tick, tick on the sidelines....

Wrong. Tuel played fine and is a LOCK for the roster. This game was a "get out alive" type of gameplan. He had very few chances to prove anything because the coaching was shielding him from any adversity. He made some nice plays considering.

Like some others, I think the Bills keep Tuel. I don't think Hackett relishes the idea of trying to teach 2 QBs his offense with 2 weeks remaining before the opener. Let's remember that Hackett is OC and QB coach both. He doesn't have a lot of time for make-up classes.

That leaves Leinart, Lewis and Kolb battling for one spot. I'm guessing Kolb goes to IR and Lewis goes to PS if still eligible.
