Historically Parker's players have shown up at the end of camp/start of the season if on a franchise tag

Which is why I'm wondering if Byrd exerted control over the situation and signed despite Parker's advice not to? And if that's the case, there is genuine hope for signing him to an extension. I honestly thought he wouldn't settle for anything south of Troy P money to stay in Buffalo.

Wonder if this means they have a long-term agreement in principle with Parker.

Doubtful. This early it would be far too volatile for either side to expect it to hold up. He knows to get paid he has to show up and play well - that's why he's here.

As Parker would surely agree, you don't create leverage by showing up in November and playing poorly. This is the window that balances risk of injury with reward of getting up to speed

As many of us said numerous times, there was no way in hell he was gonna miss any games.

Not at $432,000 per game.

Exactly. I thought he wouldn't sign until after the 4th preseason game, but it was only a matter of time.

My point was Parker wants his player in house playing well week 1 as bad as the player wants to

Well, historically that hasn't been the case with tagged Parker clients, has it? I mean he likes to have his players show up a week before the opener and while he wants them to play well, that's not the best way to go about it. But I like your take on it just the same.

You want four reasons why none of you should complain about Byrd skipping camp when he has no long term security and no huge signing bonus...

1. Dustin Keller's ACL

2. Dustin Keller's PCL

3. Dustin Keller's MCL

4. Dustin Keller's dislocated knee cap

I wonder if Byrd watched that and said to himself "dang, that better not happen to me. I could have signed for $7M/year with $20M guaranteed!"

Parker's not as terrible as the board paints him in this situation. The only issues I can think of are peters who was not tagged - being paid a fraction of what he "deserved" and still able to negotiate longterm which isn't the same. Crabtree, again able to negotiate long term making a holdout different.

Walter jones showed a little late 1 of the 3 times he was tagged, showing up on time the other two. Do you know of a significant holdout with Parker and the franchise tag?

No, I'm genuinely asking if that's the case with Parker historically. I agree with your take that reporting now is the best balance of risk vs. being ready to play well in week 1. So my respect for Parker has gone up as a result.

I'm pretty sure jones is the only one, though i don't know how many more chances hes had to play his cards with a franchised player. Even being tagged 3 times though, he only missed any playing time once and it wasnt significant.

It just seems like this coming week was the sweet spot for something to happen - though its a few days ahead of my guess even. Parker plays it out til the bitter end but he's also smart enough not to hurt his leverage next year (either by risking injury or low quality of play). His players are commodities and he has to maximize their value to maximize his own.

I'm quite happy to have Byrd back. I hate hold outs in general, but being back before the third preseason game is plenty of time to be healthy, up on the playbook, and in game shape for week 1 which it is all about.

I hope they get a long term deal next off season, but for now I'm glad he will be there 16 times ready to increase our chances of winning each time.

And again, the franchise tag for next year is immaterial to Byrd/Parker, because the tag will go up to at least $8.4 million. So in two seasons, Byrd will collect $15.5 million guaranteed, and still be in line for a big payday in 2015. That's why Bills either extend him right after the season, or don't tender the tag at all.

Not sure about that. If I couldn't sign him to a long term contract after the season, because he wanted 9 mil a year and I was only willing to pay him 8, I would franchise him for another year at 8.4 and then try again the next year, depending on the affect he had on the field and the team, to sign him to a long term deal.

Good point on Parker. And,except for some bi-polar fan forum reactions he's really not that bad of an agent or person.

One former coach/GM/VP recently inducted into the HOF actually liked dealing with him.

Putting it into a bit of perspective. What player who is good wouldn't want Parker as an agent? The sometime hysteria and hate towards the guy (and Byrd) here in recent months was plain silly. Including the 99% of unsubstantiated BS presented as fact. Interesting to read some posts by the same people who crapped on him all along. Tonight, their singing a bit of a different tune. Byrd makes this a better team despite the opinions that he was easily replaceable, and wouldn't fit in Pettines "scheme". He's been one of the few players for the past few years that actually earned his check. Good to have him back.
