When I did my ride-along years ago, we did some ambulance calls like the article. We were not told before arriving what was going on, just to be there "in case there's trouble".

Totally asinine. The case should be thrown out. He's a police officer who was responding to a call about a crazy person and ended up being attacked by the crazy person. That sort of thing might be coming from way out in left field if you're delivering a pizza, but that's called "reasonable risk" when you're a cop.
