ExiledInIllinois
http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/07/28/hudson-river-boat-crash-bride-best-man/2593353/ Sad story. Read the comments. People are whacked about the lights on the bridge/work barge(s)... Even marked on charts since April. I hear it all the time... Mostly people hitting/floundering on the breakwaters/rocks. Who goes speeding @ night, let alone possibly DUI, well most likely DUI? 2 that get tossed die. 2 of the four that live have their PFD's on, the 2 dead weren't wearing them. Strong correlation there. YET... People are still finding fault in the lit (within USCG reg) obstruction... Good grief! Same thing would have happend if they were sober and hit a log! The arraigned the guy hospital bedside for vehicular manslaughter and rightly so!
ExiledInIllinois
Here is an update on the crash: http://www.usatoday....-crash/2597489/ The two dead were NOT wearing their PFD's and had only minor injuries. They died of drowning. Probably knocked out from the accident, a PFD would have turned them over to breath and floated them! Goes to show, always wear your life jacket! Now the strange part... They were "dining and dashing!" The 6 skipped out on a 300 dollar dinner bill. No wonder they were in a hurry! Yikes... What a dishonorable way to go! They skip out on dinner but can't skip paying the the ferryman! How do the survivors live w/this? EDIT: http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/07/30/rockland-county-town-mourns-victims-of-hudson-river-boat-accident/ WTF? "Fellow survivors Schumacher and Daniel Dilorgi were also injured. Both have hired attorneys for possible lawsuits against the operators of the barge that their boat hit, in the middle of the river, in the dark." They are saying that the barges were lit to USCG regs... Dollar to donuts, the speed boat was running w/no lights after skiipping out on a 300 dollar dinner tab. Wow... Just wow! KD in CA
Article from two months ago: http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2013107090002 The U.S. Coast Guard has put boaters on alert through its Notice to Mariners, a weekly publication that provides safety information including upcoming work and changes to navigational charts. Boaters are advised to use “extreme caution” when passing through the area, its recent editions say. . . “Recreational boaters will still be able to enjoy the Hudson River during construction,” said Brian Conybeare, a special adviser to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on the project. “We do encourage boaters to stay clear of construction areas at all times.” . . “They’re going to have to pay attention, especially at night,” Luciano said. “It’s just a matter of common sense.” Very sad, but this is what happens when you refuse to pay attention to your surroundings. It's inconceivable that boaters in this area wouldn't know about the new Tappan Zee Bridge construction.
