The Poojer Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 that kinda sucks, he would have done a great job... http://variety.com/2013/more/news/sacha-baron-cohen-exits-freddie-mercury-biopic-1200566480/
ajzepp Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Dang, what the hell? I thought this project was actually filming soon...was really looking forward to this.
The Big Cat Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 that kinda sucks, he would have done a great job... http://variety.com/2...pic-1200566480/ I'm going to guess that if there were "creative" differences, SBC was right. I think we now have a ****ty movie to look forward to.

Just Jack Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Updates.... Freddie Mercury biopic ‘not likely to go ahead without Sacha Baron Cohen’ Daniel Radcliffe shoots down Freddie Mercury casting rumours
ajzepp Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 So frustrating...this reminds me of when Bruce Campbell go too full of himself and walked away from Bubba Nosferatu. I'm too big of a fan of SBC to hold this against him, but this is something I've been looking forward to since I first heard about it quite a while ago. Really a shame. I hope he reconsiders.

Cohen is dropping out, the article says, over creative differences. It seems Brian May and Roger Taylor want a flick with mainstream appeal, while Cohen wants something a little more dark, or artisitc. I can't fault Cohen at all...May and Taylor are as likely interested in selling more copies of Queens Greatest Hits, as they are in telling the story of their friend, honestly. Mercury, by all accounts, had a lot of secrets and skeltons...that would be a much more interesting story, than a glossed over Queen story. I love that band, don't get me wrong, and I think May is a mf'er on the guitar but to this day, May seems reluctant to even admit that Freddie was gay, or if the other guys in the band are, or even knew that Freddie was. In my opinion, if the living powers that be aren't interested in telling the story, maybe it is a story not worth telling. A persons sexuality doesn't define them necessarily, but you can't tell the story of Freddie Mercuy without acknowledging it. It was a huge part of his life, and, sadly, his death. The way the climate and temperature about homosexuality have changed over the years, I can't believe that this could be an issue, or that exposing it to the un-knowing masses (who doesn't realize that Freddie Mercury was gay, at this point?) would be controversial. Just doing a puff-piece movie about Mercury, in my opinion, would be a great dis-servince to him. If the portrait of Mercury was "dark", it wouldn't necessarily be taken as being negative. KD in CA Posted September 27, 2013 Posted September 27, 2013 Just doing a puff-piece movie about Mercury, in my opinion, would be a great dis-servince to him. But it would almost certainly sell more movie tickets. I don't know anything about this project, but I know that reason has sunk a lot of potentially good movies. I'm guessing they'd have to really gloss over someone like FM to sell it to standard Friday night moving going audiences.

Yeah, I would agree with pretty much everything you said...I respect SBC and definitely would give him the benefit of the doubt that he had good reason to walk away.
Johnny Hammersticks Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Who else could pull off Freddie Mercury? Ashton Kutcher?
Dibs Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Who else could pull off Freddie Mercury? .... :w00t: :w00t:
Gugny Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 (edited) Here's an idea. Let the guy rest in peace. Sorry you can't drag his name through the mud and have the personal satisfaction of dragging skeletons from his closet when he's no longer here to explain or defend his actions, Sacha. May and Taylor aren't blocking this for more money. They're blocking it to save the legacy of their dear friend. I commend them. I'd love to see a biopic of Mercury. He is one of my favorite rock stars/vocalists of all time. My first live show was Queen. He was an inspiration. If he wanted the world to know of all of his indiscretions, my guess is that he would have either told the world on his own terms - or given someone else explicit instructions. It's apparent he did neither. This is a man who knew his death was imminent long before he passed. It's clear he died with the world knowing what he wanted the world to know. That should be respected. Forever. !@#$ you, Sacha Baron. Edit: fixed a typo Edited September 28, 2013 by Gugny

ajzepp Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Who else could pull off Freddie Mercury? Ashton Kutcher? Ben Affleck says hi
Johnny Hammersticks Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Ben Affleck says hi Indeed...he is also on a short list of candidates
Doc Posted September 28, 2013 Posted September 28, 2013 Without the sensationalism of FM's gay side, the picture, which was already a longshot to be a hit, is even more of a longshot. And frankly, you can get more info from one of those "behind the music" pieces anyway.

Edit: fixed a typo Pretty much what I was saying Gungy...but it is May and Taylor who want to "tell" the Freddie Mercury story, through their clouded lenses. If they just want to tell the story of the rise of Queen, that is one thing...but if they want to tell the Freddie Mercury story, they can't really do their friend any justice by not telling his story accurately. Being closeted is likely what killed him. It almost sounds like they just want to sell their story, and sell more of their records...is there a band that has more cinematic anthems than Queen? Their motives, at least to me, sound disingenous. If they don't want to tell his story, than by all means, let him rest in peace.
Just Jack Posted September 30, 2013 Posted September 30, 2013 .is there a band that has more cinematic anthems than Queen? I can't think of one....

T Anthems...probably not. But contemporaries of theirs who have very cinematic music: ELO.
