Doc
You mean affordable steel?
DC Tom
Type of steel, or type of part? Two different things...and while I'd be very surprised if a US manufacturer couldn't make the steel itself, I wouldn't be surprised if no one in the US could fabricate orthotropic decking at reasonable cost. John Adams
The AFL-CIO guy says the labor is cheaper in China and that if the steel plates were manufactured in the US, it would add 100M to the cost. And that's his argument for why it SHOULD be done with steel plates made in the US. Cuckoo. Edited July 2, 2013 by John Adams
Chef Jim
Because we suck. http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/matier-ross/article/Bay-Bridge-inspections-busted-bolts-4386943.php At least 30 of the giant bolts that hold together the new, $6.4 billion eastern span of the Bay Bridge have snapped Unlike the Chinese-built deck sections, the bolts - some as long as 17 feet - were produced in the United States. Nanker
They should be ashamed to outsource $250 million. They should produce it here - for $350 million. Screw the toll payers!
ExiledInIllinois
Because we suck. http://www.sfgate.co...lts-4386943.php You know what... We suck because they taught us how to suck. Race to the bottom. We used to own the world when it came to these issues, now price is driving even our quality down. "The bridge, which has been under construction for more than a decade, has had a history of trouble and setbacks - most notably when microscopic cracks were found in the steel deck sections being fabricated in China." OCinBuffalo
The same could be said about qaulity of journalism. Fox News has driven down the standards in the business. Fox is exactly like China, and many of the people at Fox have made a lot of money collaborating with the Chinese. This easily explains how the rest of the media missed the boat on all these "stories". Had they been up to standard, they would have gotten ahead of the scandals, and told us the real facts long before Fox News had a chance to spew their distortions. But, since Fox News has already suceeded in lowering the standard for journalism, the rest of the media didn't have the ability or skill to go and find the stories before Fox did. And, WRT to steel, Fox News has been pushing for the destruction of every single manufacturing job in America, since they went on air. How, they opposed card check. They don't seem to realize that the unions create steel. Opposing the unions is opposing steel. Any idiot can see that.
