BringBackFergy
If you tie flies for fishing, the bobbin holds the spool of thread when you wrap thread around the body of the fly. Is that what you were thinking??

ExiledInIllinois
It is the spool that holds the lower thread on a sewing machine. The upper thread is threaded through the needle. The needle goes through the fabic and locked with the lower thread. The lower thread is spooled off a bobbin. The upper thread comes directly off the original spool. One can load a bobbin from the orignal thread spool via the side of the machine.
