Alaska Darin Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Tough to top VH's debut...no doubt about it... 203477 It changed music and the guitar for nearly 20 years.
KOKBILLS Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Damn good topic Rico!!! Ugh...too many... 1) AIC - Facelift 2) Jeff Buckley - Grace 3) Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - I mean...when had anyone heard anything like that before! 4) VH1 5) White Trash - I thought that Band would take over the World...Oh well... 6) G&R - Appetite - May be the best debut ever... 7) Dio - Holy Diver 8) Queensryche - The EP or Warning, does not matter to me...Both were awesome! 9) Janes Addiction - Nothings Shocking... 10) Pearl Jam - Ten - I pretty much can't stand anything they've done since...But that 1st try was awesome... I tried to concentrate on Debuts...SO many I probably left off... I LOVE these Music OT's!!!
KOKBILLS Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 It changed music and the guitar for nearly 20 years. 203483 I grew up in LA... and I can still remember the 1st time I heard VH on the Radio out there WAY back when...I was like "What in the name of God was that!" And I sprinted to the Record Store!

SDS Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Well, best needs to be defined - these threads usually end up being about obscure favorite bands of each poster. I think a reasonable definition would be airplay of a large portion of the album (commercial acceptance), but also standing the test of time (a measure of quality). For that, it is hard to argue against Boston or Van Halen. Hell, I think there are still entire radio stations that put on Boston's 1st and just let it play over and over (WCMF). One other band that hit it out of the park with their debut was Bad Company....
Tux of Borg Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I grew up in LA... and I can still remember the 1st time I heard VH on the Radio out there WAY back when...I was like "What in the name of God was that!" And I sprinted to the Record Store! 203496 Aww... Van Halen I was recorded in 77 and released in 78. They recently re-released the MXR 90 Phase Shifter that Eddie used to create the "brown sound". I need to dig up $130 and pick one up.
JLO Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 A lot of work and a lot of rude, crude, lewd drunken debauchery between Las Vegas and Phoenix, where I still am. 203245 Dirty Work
nick in* england Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 Boston - BostonCounting Crows - August & Everything After(?) just off the top of my head 201996 Well done that man. I totally agree with the Counting Crows pick there. August and Everything After is a superb album, debuting at exactly the right time and filling a gap in the music world where no other existed. 'August' does not recieve much in the way of praise for leading a generation of music, or shaping later generations, but what it did was capture the mood and the feelings of a generation in such a timeless way that I think as a work of music, it will transcend time. Take a look at each song and the album and you get a feeling for just how good it is individually, but listen as a composition of music and you really expeience and album like no other. Superb!

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? - album Reprise Records 6261. Released: Wednesday, August 23, 1967. Charts peak: ? (106 weeks) Tracks: 1. Purple Haze 2. Manic Depression 3. Hey Joe 4. Love Or Confusion 5. RuntheDamnBall Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 I love most kinds of music, if done well and the songs are crafted well. However, the one album that stands out to me right now is Five Leaves Left by Nick Drake. 203274 Good one. Pink Moon's still my favorite. But Five Leaves Left is awesome.
RuntheDamnBall Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 It changed music and the guitar for nearly 20 years. 203483 Can you honestly say, even though that album is great, that the change was for the better? I mean, come on, we also got Def Leppard, Winger, and Guitar Magazines out of that deal. I'd say it's a draw at best.
SestakFan Posted January 13, 2005 Posted January 13, 2005 All very good choices indeed. I would have to say the best debut album in my opinion is the first Beatles major label release in the US. "Meet The Beatles" The music on that first disk pretty much changed the course of modern music from that era. It totally obliterated the boy singers that were really popular at that time. Thank the fab four for the demise of stiffs like Frankie Avalon, Fabian,Pat Boone.....

TONS of hot chicks - willing and ready. Compare that to the average Priest or Maiden show - 3 biker chicks just outta da joint...
