Ugh...too many... 1) AIC - Facelift 2) Jeff Buckley - Grace 3) Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - I mean...when had anyone heard anything like that before! 4) VH1 5) White Trash - I thought that Band would take over the World...Oh well... 6) G&R - Appetite - May be the best debut ever... 7) Dio - Holy Diver 8) Queensryche - The EP or Warning, does not matter to me...Both were awesome! 9) Janes Addiction - Nothings Shocking... 10) Pearl Jam - Ten - I pretty much can't stand anything they've done since...But that 1st try was awesome... I think a reasonable definition would be airplay of a large portion of the album (commercial acceptance), but also standing the test of time (a measure of quality). For that, it is hard to argue against Boston or Van Halen. Hell, I think there are still entire radio stations that put on Boston's 1st and just let it play over and over (WCMF). I totally agree with the Counting Crows pick there. August and Everything After is a superb album, debuting at exactly the right time and filling a gap in the music world where no other existed. 'August' does not recieve much in the way of praise for leading a generation of music, or shaping later generations, but what it did was capture the mood and the feelings of a generation in such a timeless way that I think as a work of music, it will transcend time. Take a look at each song and the album and you get a feeling for just how good it is individually, but listen as a composition of music and you really expeience and album like no other. Superb! I would have to say the best debut album in my opinion is the first Beatles major label release in the US. "Meet The Beatles" The music on that first disk pretty much changed the course of modern music from that era. It totally obliterated the boy singers that were really popular at that time.
