Getting Sunday Ticket discounted or free

Recommended Posts

I got a couple uninterested folks at DTV today and bombed. Basically all they did was lower my sunday ticket bill down from $225 to $198 and then after more "discussions" down to $179. No extra credits, no genie, no 3 months free on movie channels or anything. When i got to $179 she said "sir, this the best offer i can give you at this time", and said i was free to cancel if that was my preference. They were letting me walk.

I think they probably saw on my account history all the times I have called in and threatened cancellation in the past. SO now, i feel like calling back in a few days and telling them what i want and not accepting anything less. Has anyone done that? I can do it in a diplomatic way but I will mention other loyal customers have gotten a MUCH better deal than myself (a 13 year customer, never late)...and that Fios just moved in to my neighborhood. Maybe i will finally crack and cancel...get the Red Zone channel on Fios, and go to the new Buffalo Wild WIngs that opened up the street. It's huge and I'm sure shows all the games. I'd hate to do it but i felt like i was not that important to them.

Interesting as we get closer to the start of the season that you see the Ticket deals getting smaller. Will be curious moving forward if anyone is able to land the full-boat ST for free with Genie, etc. The CSR I spoke to mentioned there was a window, and I wonder if that window is now closing.

I think once they start billing for it the deals are over. Billing starts soon I believe.

Were you talking with the Customer Retention department?

Don't even waste your time speaking to anyone other than customer retention. When the robot lady asks to to state your reason for calling, just say "cancel service." The Verizon FIOS thing might be a good card to play...the Dish thing seemed to work well for me. I only has 2 months left on my contract though...they might think they have you by the short and curlys if you have a lot of time left on yours.

If you do lay out your demands, they are not met, and you do decide to cancel, I'd be willing to bet you'd get a call within the next couple days trying to lure you back.

Agreed, as soon as you get thru say cancel service. When they tell you that well you got to December for your contract to run out & it is $20 per month for a cancellation fee tell them Fios offered a $200 credit so your not concerned about the fee. Tell them you want ST for free & $15 off your bill every month for the next year or your cancelling. If they still call your bluff after that just hang up on them.

I don't know. After the first person, i asked to speak to her manager and those were the only two i dealt with.

I would add this: go in committed to cancel. You have to be prepared to cancel or you'll never get what you want. In other words, don't start asking for deals or letting them know you're open to anything. The first 15 minutes of my call featured me saying things like "No, look, I appreciate what you're doing. It's not about the price of ST. The fact is I'm just tired of watching my team suck. And the truth is, the only reason we've been your customer so long is because of the Ticket. So I just want to cancel and need to know, do you come get the receivers or do I have to send them back to you? No, really, look...my team sucks, and the only thing worse than having a crappy team is realizing it and still having four more payments to make. So let's just cancel. No, really...okay, look, if you really feel like you have a great deal, let me hear it, and then we'll move on to cancelling."

But you have to be committed to going full cancel.

Jonny is correct. Hit Cancel Service and you get a real person fast. I might not have gotten the deals others have got but I got the ticket down to 9.99 amonth for six months and a 10 credit for a year on HD. I said I couldn't afford it and our local network had 9 of 16 games on for the Bills. Said they always took care of me before and was sorry but I had to cancel the Ticket. They were very nice. Honey works every time. I'm happy.

This is spot on. When I called, and got a nice deal, I didn't even mention any of my "demands" until 20 minutes into the conversation. I very calmly and politely told the woman that I fully intended to switch to Dish because of what they were offering. When she reminded me that DTV had exclusive rights to the ST, I told her that there was a bar right down the street where I could watch the games, and I meant it. Even after she came back with something really close to what I wanted, I still told her that I wanted to cancel. That is when, after being on hold for 3 minutes, she sweetened the pot with the upgrade to ST Max and 12 months of HBO/Showtime.

I told her...you sold me.

Okay, thanks for all the advice. I called back and asked for retention immediately. Got past their first wave of billing specialists. Got a nice southern girl on the phone named Angie. I was honest, told her I felt I was not important on my earlier call, and I was thinking about switching to Fios. Told her I pay full price for Center Ice and Gameplan and I have friends who have fewer years invested in DTV and they are getting ST for free. Told her I was not asking for FREE but I needed a better deal on the ticket. She immediately said we want to keep you around and said she would give me a $30 credit for 6 months....which essentially made my $29.99 x 6 months, free. The she said she's give me an extra 6 months on top of that,,, so basically Sunday ticket is free and then another $180 in credits for the final 6 months. Nice. On top of that I asked if they had any free movie specials so she gave me Showtime for 4 months and STARZ for 6 months free. I'm happy now.

I never knew you could do this! I wonder if it works for Time Warner....

Doubt it, since TWC doesn't offer Sunday Ticket. But go ahead and give it a try, and report back with your results. ;)

Will it work with TWC, sure the difference though is TWC may offer you a 5% discount where as DTV may give you a 75% discount or even more. I'm guessing that DTV has figured out once you've gone to satelite, likely you're house is still wired for cable so very easy to go back so they bend over backawards t omake sure you don't leave. If you never had satelite service more of a hassle getting it the first time, where to locate dish relative ot where TV's are located can sometimes be dificult. (I will not let DTV run cables on the outside of my house) So TWC tends to view themselves as the only game in town and in some respects is true, so they won't give as great deals.

The biggest issue I have with TWC is the rental price of their equipment, and not nearly as good. $20 a month for TWC whole house DVR and that only give you a recorder with two tuners and can handle around 20 hours of HD

I just got off the phone with the Retention Department and received Sunday ticket free plus a $25 a month discount for the next 15 months. Only had to agree to 1 yr. commitment. Also didn't hurt that I've been with them since they started.
