Chef Jim Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Overrated: Asia. We saw them at a small venue opening for Yes. As soon as every song started my wife and I looked at each other and said "GAY!!". And then Steve Howe came back out with Yes and proceeded to kick ass! WTF dude?!?!
BuffaloBill Posted June 1, 2013 Posted June 1, 2013 Is Asia even rated? Only in the heat of the moment.
Buftex Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 How about this spin on the question: Name one band/artist that you like, but is "overrated"...
Gugny Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 How about this spin on the question: Name one band/artist that you like, but is "overrated"... I'm gonna have to go with KISS. I love all of their albums released in the 70s, with "Dynasty," being the last one. I do believe they had talent; but I will concede that their talent was not jaw-dropping. But it was pure Rock and Roll, if you ask me; and I love every bit of it!!!
Delete This Account Posted June 2, 2013 Author Posted June 2, 2013 saw Asia. was underwhelmed. played like an hour set. for all their talent, they never achieved any type of potential. their debut album was much hyped, but Asia never reached any sort of critical mass of respect. so if there's much consensus that Asia wasn't much of anything at all, well, that doesn't make them over-rated in my definition. back to another topic discussed here, in regards to The Clash and some on the right adopting "Guns of Brixton" as an anthem. there's more than a hint of hypocrisy here, no? the uprising in Brixton in the early 1980s was a conflict of frustration directed at, in part, to Maggie Thatcher and her economic policies. there was more to it -- calls of racism -- than that, of course, but no need to spell it all out. to have someone on the right adopt these lyrics, this song and The Clash, continues a trend by those who like to co-opt the past and have it fit their own agendas. it's square-pegs in round-hole obliviousness that panders to the choir. what's next, the right holding a Woody Guthrie revival? jw
Philly McButterpants Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 JW and I have differing views of what constitutes rock n roll. That I said I 100% agree with his assessment of The Doors.

Just as, whoever it was, decided using Springsteens "Born In the USA", or, even, "Back to Ohio" as used by Rush... they are just tapping into a lyric, and whatever anger or edge those lyrics have. If there is one bad thing in this era of communication overload, all context and nuance is lost on many people...or they just don't care to recognize it. Edited June 2, 2013 by Buftex
Chilly Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 (edited) How about this spin on the question: Name one band/artist that you like, but is "overrated"... everyone I listen too would be considered overrated by this board. I pretty much just listen to electronica. Edited June 2, 2013 by BlueFire
Chef Jim Posted June 2, 2013 Posted June 2, 2013 everyone I listen too would be considered overrated by this board. I pretty much just listen to electronica. Give us an example. I'm a big fan of underrated meaning **** I like you don't. These guys opened for my current favorite band a few years ago and kicked major ass.
