Female Cardinal Attacking Windows

Recommended Posts

Anybody got any remedies for a crazed Lady Bird cardinal that sees her reflection and relentlessly launches into the windows? I don't mind it so much but, the noise is annoying. Seems she laid off for a while... Maybe had the kids hatch from the eggs... But today, she is back @ it! Anybody know of a product out there that would be easy to apply, remove and takes the reflection away while still making the window viewable? Thought about soaping the windows, that's a pain...

Oh... The male will do it from time to time but, he gets the message rather quickly... These cardinals gotta be the stupidest birds on the planet with raging hormones. She only launches from a shrubs and I don't want to cut them down.

We had the same problem with a male that would wake us up every morning. We put a screen in front of the window that cut down on the 'mirror effect' of the glass and that solved the problem.

Here's some commercial remedies as well:

We had a bird like that last year and were told to put foil up in the window for a few days...sure enough, it stopped once we did. Not sure if that's feasible in your situation, but it worked for us.

I got a BB gun and wrist rocket (sling shot)... My luck, karma will get me to break the window by accident! ;-) The nest has got to be close... She is looking for a fight! She is @ it again early this morning... I block off the window and she goes around to the front windows!!... Those have blinds on the lower windows, so she will launch @ the top lights where no blinds are!

AJ... How does the foil approach work? Wouldn't that make it worse? Reflect more... Or do you crinkle the foil up?

Oh... We got three cats... They are going wild, this bird would be a gone if it wasn't for the glass. The felines are spoiled indoor type. Even w/their pampered lives, I should kick them out for a few days and let them wreck havoc on the scene! There is a robin's nest in a spruce tree with three chicks, they are minding their business... That would be collateral damage... Yet, those poor little kitties would probably get gobbled up by the coyotes! Try explaining that to the kidlets! "Cirlce of life, Fluffy ate the cardinal & robins, now Wile E. Coyote ate Fluffy." My daughter would disown me knowing the cats are out there with the barking and howling going on in the distance!

Thanks for the links! Interesting! The part about the bluebirds is crazy... They will come to the screens and beg for mealworms... :-O Isn't the bluebird the state bird of New York State? LoL! Wow, the welfare mentality never gets old! ;-) Northern cardinal state bird of Illinois and a host of others too.

i feel threatened by that picture, you should be immediately kicked off and suspended from this board

Just looking for some good conversation and for tricks that actual board members used to remedy their specific situation. I pretty much Googled it already... Tried a whole bunch of stuff. But, I didn't catch the foil thing... If he was being serious. I would think it would make it worse!

Cripes... Get this... I just moved to the kitchen to see what the ruckus was about... Cats gave up and went back to sleep... Lazy lumps were keeping her @ bay a little. The male cardinal is in the picture. He is not attacking the window but, just gave the female a peck on the beak/kiss as if to say: "You go honey! Take it that other cardinal!" Birds are surreal!

Here is the kicker... I have feeder close... Probably the problem... BUT I don't want to move it to the tree because you can watch the other birds better! All the other ones, gold finches, orioles, nut hatches are not bothered by this cardinal(s) and go about their business. Putting the silhouettes up may scare them off! Again, they are not the problem and mind their business... Even with cats staring @ them living in harmony. This one cardinal is wrecking the whole show!

I gotta get creative here and make it easy... I think the gun approach is looking better each day! ;-)

Ok Exiled, here's the surefire remedy to put an end to this frustrating ordeal for you:

Go to the kitchen, take out the blender, put in a frozen lemonade mix, 3 parts rye whiskey, 2 parts water, one egg, cherry juice, one scoop ice cream, 1/2 cup sugar, 12 ice cubes, put top on and blend for one minute.

Pour into tall glass.

Take seat on porch, blast AC/DC and watch the little bugger crash into the window and laugh at him.

After 15 minutes, return to kitchen and repeat.

Your troubles will soon disappear.

No idea, really....I think it was the apartment office who told us to do that, cause apparently it's a problem they encounted from time to time. It was driving me nuts cause it was smacking into the window right above my bed, starting around 515am every morning and it just would-not-stop. The foil fixed it immediately and after I took it down a few days later he never came back.

Exactly! I could care less about the bird... It is the darn noise that they make when they hit... Trying to sleep during the day is a pain! Thump! Thwack! I mean, get the hint bird... You are getting owned!

Thanks... I am gonna try the foil!

The asian carp, possibly snakehead fish, is using the cardinal as muscle in its ploy to conquer the great lakes. One man stands in the way.

LoL... Just give me 80 million dollars and I will get ear plugs... REALLY NICE ear plugs!

Heck yeah, screw the bird lol. I was ready to reach out and grab the damn thing with my bare hands by the third day of that crap... :wallbash:

Good luck! (BTW, they told us to put the foil on the inside of the window)

Thanks! I was reading where the outside would be better for knocking the reflection... But it is rainy and what not... It would turn to shambles. The foil I am think would be better on the inside I suppose... May make it worse on the outside. Anyway... All I can find around the house is tissue paper... LoL... All out of tin foil. I put it on the inside (rainy) and now this screwy beeatch is going to the high windows in front! She is even "kissing" the male @ times! I got like a low brow ghetto event brewing in my yard! Wife is gonna hate what I have done to the interior decorating, she'll tear it down! "All you need to do is talk to the nice birds." she will say. Yeah right, nothing a 12 gauge and some bird shot won't solve!

Tissue paper is holding its own... Still early... Male bird will get her all jacked up! Gonna get some foil later and try that!
