bbb Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I don't get the point of this. It seems to take forever to get here, as it is, and this gives less time for rookie OTAs, etc.: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9295316/nfl-close-shifting-draft-sources
BillsWatch Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I think NFL teams want more time to look at rookies. They also want to get more FAs signed before draft. I think NFL front office wants to move NFL draft to a period which they can affect ratings more. I think the NFLPA wants to oppose anything NFL wants on matter of principle (principle being "pay us or no"). If free agency period and June 1 date are not moved I think it is a bad idea. Maybe good for some rookies since their schools are still in session and they will miss less OTAs but they could just move the OTAs dates.
KD in CA Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 May is a network sweeps month. The draft is a ratings winner.
Mark Vader Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 The reason is because they want to have the draft during May Sweeps. Bigger ratings=More money, and that's what it's all about.
I_want_2_BILL_Lieve Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 (edited) I heard this today too, and it sounded like that is the direction the NFL is going. Seems like it penalizes teams with new coaches, or rookie QBs. Less OTAs and reps for everyone. Edited May 20, 2013 by I_want_2_BILL_Lieve
NoSaint Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 May is a network sweeps month. The draft is a ratings winner. bingo. nothing to do with football.
The Big Cat Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 bingo. nothing to do with football. Why not start it the same day, then do a pick-a-day until the first round is over?
bbb Posted May 20, 2013 Author Posted May 20, 2013 Why not start it the same day, then do a pick-a-day until the first round is over? Seriously, that would get the most ratings possible, right? One every day in May.
The Big Cat Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Seriously, that would get the most ratings possible, right? One every day in May. I mean, it almost seems idiocracy-esque. But you think ESPN/NFLN could blow 30 minutes in the lead-up to, and an analysis of every first round pick? You bet your ass they could!
bbb Posted May 20, 2013 Author Posted May 20, 2013 Maybe they can finish the 7th round the day before camp opens in July. Instant gratification for Mr. Irrelevant!
GG Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 May is a network sweeps month. The draft is a ratings winner. Not necessarily. Both draft shows are on cable networks, where sweeps aren't that important.
KollegeStudnet Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Teams have scouts, video and personnel meetings about/with these players before they are drafted. Change to get more time to evaluate rookies seems like an excuse. However, this change to May is all about monies. ...and ratings
Buff_bills4ever Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 As long as they do the first and second round on the first day, I don't really care when it is. I hate only having the first round to talk about after the first day.
Fixxxer Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 Great, we will have more time for useless mock drafts Seriously, I don't know how I feel about it. The draft is in the last week of April, are we talking end of May or just a couple fo days into the month? I only see the rookies as the only ones really affected by this decision.
seq004 Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I would like to see free agency and draft reverse periods. Have the draft in march and FA in april.
swnybillsfan Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 I mean, it almost seems idiocracy-esque. But you think ESPN/NFLN could blow 30 minutes in the lead-up to, and an analysis of every first round pick? You bet your ass they could! does this mean that in between picks we could watch new episodes of "ow, my bawlz"?! sign me up dude, i got my gatorade ready cuz it's got electrolites!
Nitro Posted May 20, 2013 Posted May 20, 2013 There was talk here in Indy during the NFL Combine to move it back a month to get the NFL to a year around TV schedule. After the Draft there is a lull from May to July and the start or training camp. If the move the Combine back one month, then they can move the Draft to the end of May. Secondary effect is new GMs and coaching staffs can get in place and ready for the draft. Makes sense when you want your sport to be the topic of sports conversation year around. No real off season from football anymore for the fans.
Johnny Hammersticks Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 It was like pulling my finger nails out waiting for the draft in late-April. Then again, if we somehow make the playoffs, we likely won't start talking draft in early December
ganesh Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Now we have to go through five additional Mock Drafts from the clowns in ESPN and NFL network.
