JoeB changed his mock to Manuel only after Chris Brown did. Brown was the first person I heard to talk about EJ as the kind of QB that Marrone and Hackett would want for the new offense. Everyone else, including Joe B, was on either Nassib or Barkley.

You may be right but I am not sure about that. It was a couple days before the draft I think I heard JoeB start saying don't count out Manuel. He has been hearing too much stuff about it. Both Joe and Chris put their last mocks out pretty much on the last day. But I'm not sure at all that JB only started that after Chris Brown did. I think I heard him before.

I guess if being asst GM for an organization that had a 33% winning percent qualifies him as competent he'll be a rousing success

I guess hiring the guy who was the Steelers Pro Player Director for 10 years doesn't qualify him as competent?

This was Joe B's final mock: http://www.wgr550.com/Buscaglia-NFL-Mock-Draft-Final-Cut/16156270

16) - QB E.J. Manuel, Florida State

- I've had both Matt Barkley and Ryan Nassib going to the Bills, and while both of those players are among the trio that could be picked, there's just something about this E.J. Manuel story that isn't going away. I've been hearing all three players are in the mix. Looking at Buddy Nix's track record, they take prototypical players early. Manuel is the new prototypical quarterback in the NFL, possessing the size and speed teams covet. Is he a polished passer? No. But if the Bills take him, I'm betting they believe they can get way more out of him than Jimbo Fisher did at Florida State. They better be right, because this would be a huge, huge pick in the history of the franchise. I still hold to the fact that it's a three-horse race, but all in all I believe it will be a quarterback selected in the first round.

Joe B was definitely late to the party on EJ.

He was on WGR around 5pm or so that day citing sources that Manuel was the guy.

That was after Chris Brown was on WGR saying Manuel would be the guy.

Joe B didn't rate EJ very high among the draft eligible QBs: http://www.wgr550.com/Quarterback-Rankings/12022322?pid=294881

Here is a list of the top quarterbacks the 2013 NFL Draft has to offer and how I rank them. Please note, this list is not indicative of how they will be drafted.

  1. Matt Barkley, USC
  2. Tyler Wilson, Arkansas
  3. Geno Smith, West Virginia
  4. Tyler Bray, Tennessee
  5. Ryan Nassib, Syracuse
  6. E.J. Manuel, Florida State

his main claim to fame will continue to be that his porn email reached Roger Goodell

he wasn't their director either BTW

To your first sentence, Whaley's main claim to fame FOR YOU, is the email.

Just like for some, Corey McIntyre's "main claim to fame" was exposing himself… except that he never did.

You see, it's what YOU as an individual choose to focus on. Constantly being a negative troll (look at your own post history this is a fact, not any name-calling), you choose to focus on the email but IF THAT WAS his main claim to fame, do you think he'd be getting hired as AN NFL GENERAL MANAGER???

So clearly you're not seeing what others are seeing.

As to your second sentence, no Whaley was not "Pro Personnel Director." He was "Pro Personnel Coordinator."

The reason is because the Steelers use the title "coordinator" instead of "director."

So your second sentence is a hair-splitting technicality and not in any way part of an HONEST conversation.

He definitely was late. Brown's mock came out the day before. But JoeB was already talking about that "I keep hearing" thing at that point. I just assume Brown was one of his sources. I do still think I heard JoeB talk about Manuel as the don't count out pick before Brown's posted mock draft. Just not sure.

Whatevs I predicted Nix would be an incompetent this Whaley dude won't be much better bring back Polian and let him fire Whaley and Branden

You just can't help yourself, can you? If Whaley is successful I guarantee you he gives much of the credit to Buddy.

If Whaley is successful he'll get the credit. If Buddy were to deserve credit, he would have been successful. He wasn't...end of story.

So that's your solution for greatness? Hiring someone Nix's age who got run out of his last job? All I can say is HUH??

Ozzie Newsome worked for the Browns from 1991-1995. During those years, the Browns went 36-44.

From 1996-1999, he worked for the Ravens, going 24-39.

In 2000, of course, the Ravens won their Super Bowl; a few years later, Newsome was named GM by an owner who recognized Newsome's immense contributions to that squad.

I agree that Joe W's assessment method is absurd.

Take a look at Polian's failures in the 2000s. He was a great GM, but he is out of the league for good reason.

So the team taking the field this season isn't Buddy's work?

Come on, somebody has to be upset with this.

I'm sure sooner or later someone will B word that this is an "in-house" promotion, and that the Bills are afraid to look outside the organization for promotions.

Technically, Ralph is outside of the organization now. Perhaps we should have hired him as G.M.?

What has Doug Whaley accomplished. Does he have any credentials to show us why he is a good fit for GM?!!

He's highly thought of enough to have survived a porn scandal: http://www.post-gazette.com/stories/sports/steelers/blogger-says-steelers-zierlein-inadvertently-forwarded-porn-to-nfl-officials-486160/

Steelers line coach Larry Zierlein inadvertently forwarded an e-mail he received from Doug Whaley, the Steelers' pro personnel coordinator, to multiple high-level team employees and their secretaries throughout the NFL, including commissioner Roger Goodell.

Whaley, according to Florio, received the pornographic video from someone outside the Steelers' organization and forwarded it to others, including Zierlein, who then sent it along to more e-mail addresses than he apparently intended Friday.
