FWIW, I think that's an example of the printed word not accurately conveying the true cadence and speech pattern. It sounded fine when he was speaking.

Mr. Tolstoy kind sir:

Well, good one on whether. Not how I use it for sure, but it is technically correct.

Nonsense on the OTAs. (Chicago) allows for an apostrophe "only when an abbreviation contains internal periods or both capital and lowercase letters." AP--which 90 percent of publications worldwide use--says no way. Plus, it just looks weird.

Weak sauce on the fragment, but I know (hope) you're kidding.

And double spaces suck yak balls. But you'll always find one person out of a thousand who loves yak balls.

JIA 1 million

Tolstoy 1

Edit:

Marrone 2 million. (I think he sounds fine.)

Quoted on Buffalobills.com, when referring to the need to institute blitz packages as early as OTA's, here is what the head-coach of the Bills said:

“Everyone in OTAs now is doing it,” said head coach Doug Marrone. “We have to get our players ready. You think about how training from an offensive standpoint, we’re getting the technique correct and then you’re going forward and working on those technique and fundamentals. Then for the quarterback he’s going to throw a route versus air. Then the next point is decision making. So the faster we can get to situations where is it zone, or is it pressure? Now they have to make decisions on the field and the better they’ll become and the better the evaluation for us.”

Whew. I can't follow that. We could be in for some painful post-game press conferences. But, I suppose that doesn't really matter. If he wins, I could care less whether he puts a grammatical sentence together.

Are you serious?

I think Tolstoy's original point about Marrone is valid and something worth noting about a man whose job involves communicating.

Have you actually listened to Marrone talk? He sounds just fine.

Except his verbal crutch of throwing in too many "ya knows" as a filler between his thoughts.

It's crazy every poster on this board has got Phds and look like Brad Pitt. Everyone is perfect behind a computer screen.

I don't care if Marrone spoke in farts, as long as he wins. And the guy made the top 1% of a profession that pays him millions of dollars. Whatever he studied in school worked out for him.

Fixed. OTAs -- not a possessive or a contraction. Head coach is not hyphenated.

And...

You're saying you actually care. And whether x or y. You have no y. Something has to give.

Further, it'll be a long season with two spaces between each of your sentences. One space is accepted practice in business writing, the Internet and most of civilized society.

Even Marone knows that.

:flirt:

Makes you look like a moroon.

That's not that hard to understand. He's talking about the progression of going from the simplest fundamentals (such as 'throwing against air,' aka no defense) to trying to read the defense ("So the faster we can get to situations where 'is it zone, or is it pressure?'" where the single quotes denote what the QB has to get better at doing, figuring out what the defense is doing. That last part may cause trouble, but it is a problem with how it's written, not what Doug said). Finally, they progress to making game decisions, and getting faster at it, making it easier for the coaches to evaluate them. What's so difficult about this?

Tolstoy's Russian. Take it easy on him.

FWIW, I think that's an example of the printed word not accurately conveying the true cadence and speech pattern. It sounded fine when he was speaking.

Yes. Yes it did. Listening to the sound bite and reading the transcript are two completely different experiences.

I think Tolstoy's original point about Marrone is valid and something worth noting about a man whose job involves communicating.

Disagree. See above.

I believe you meant "prolific", though "eloquent" or "articulate" would serve the statement better. Class dismissed. :-)

Erudite would also work.

Makes you look like a moroon.

Maroon possibly?

Anyways, Marrone sounds more intelligent than any coach we've had since probably Marv. I know that's not saying much but I actually think Marrone is highly intelligent…. he's just not a great speaker but his intelligence comes through IMO.

That's nothing. A dumbass in my office left a sign on her desk to dissuade others from taking something. What did it say, you ask? "THIS DO NOT BELONGS TO YOU". Yes, it was typed in all caps and, yes, it's really true. It's hard to speak English in America...

We actually had a sign up that said;

"Do to the new smoking band you cannot use back door anymore"

I was like, sweet I hope they play classic rock!

I converted what he said using "jive.com" - here it is. Makes a lot of sense!

“Everyone in OTAs now be doin' it,” said 'haid coach Doug Marrone. What it is, Mama! “We gots'ta git our players eyebally. Slap mah fro! You's dink about how trainin' fum an offensive standpoint, we’re gittin' de technique co'rect and den ya'’re goin' fo'ward and wo'kin' on dose technique and fundamentals. Den fo' de quarterback he’s goin' t'drow some route versus air. Ah be baaad... Den de next point be decision makin'. So de fasta' we kin git t'situashuns where be it zone, o' be it pressho' nuff? Now dey gots'ta make decisions on de field and da damn betta' dey’ll become and da damn betta' de evaluashun fo' us.”

Since you're being critical of others...are you sure it's "say" or did you mean to say, "it read(s)".

Anyway who cares how the coach responds to the mundane questions he's answering at nausea during the off-season? As long as the 53 guys he fields on game day understand and we win...mission accomplished. I really started to feel bad for the questions being asked by the local media to coaches, draft picks and free agents/ journeyman being acquired by the team...I tell ya every time I hear, " How do you like being picked up by the team?", "What do you think about the city?", "Are you excited about being a Bill?". It's like they're waiting for the guy to say something bad or something to justify the region as being second rate. Our image crisis is self inflicted, IMO.
