Coach Tuesday Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2013/broken-tackles-2012-defense Football Outsiders charted broken tackles against the league's defenders, and many of the Bills came out near the top. In particular, Kelvin Sheppard was one of the best-tackling linebackers in the league (you know, when he actually fought through a block and put himself in the right position to actually make a tackle). In all, the Bills' D was one of the better-tackling units in the NFL. Somewhat surprising given how horrible they were at everything else...
BuffaloBill Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Your title is misleading because the analysis points to broken tackles. The problem with the Bills defense, broken tackles aside, is that offenses were ripping off big chunks of yards. This was especially true early in the season. On paper the Bills should have had one of the best front four in. The league. The results clearly did not reflect what was on paper. At the end of the day the Bills were soft in the middle and could hardly set and edge.

BuffaloBill Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 Talk about missing the point. How is it missing the point when his title says the Bills excelled in tackling last year?
The DarkeKnight Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 (edited) I'm an excellent driver....as long as I'm not running into other things on the road. Oh yea and I'm an excellent gollfer too....as long as I hit the ball where I wanted to Edited May 11, 2013 by The DarkeKnight

Is there a stat on how many tackles we made while chasing an opponent from behind?
Mr. WEO Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 http://www.footballo...es-2012-defense Football Outsiders charted broken tackles against the league's defenders, and many of the Bills came out near the top. In all, the Bills' D was one of the better-tackling units in the NFL. Somewhat surprising given how horrible they were at everything else... Which didn't happen often, per the article. "Perhaps Sheppard had so few broken tackles because he couldn't get near enough to the ballcarrier to qualify". As for the everything else part: "This is a defense that couldn't really do much right. Their expensive defensive line couldn't pressure the quarterback and was easily pushed around in the running game. The cornerbacks struggled and the linebackers were nothing special."
mitchmurraydowntown Posted May 11, 2013 Posted May 11, 2013 We tackled great after the runner(s) gained 8 yards from the line of scrimmage, it's a miracle.
Coach Tuesday Posted May 12, 2013 Author Posted May 12, 2013 Clearly, this thread failed to attract the TBD intelligentsia...
thewildrabbit Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 Is there a stat on how many tackles we made while chasing an opponent from behind? Excellent tackling, like 20 yards past the line of scrimmage... Which didn't happen often, per the article. Bills fans look for silver linings in everything
Gray Beard Posted May 12, 2013 Posted May 12, 2013 (edited) Statistics are wonderful. That same web site ranks Buffalo 31st in team rushing defense. http://www.footballo...m/stats/teamdef Edited May 12, 2013 by Gray Beard
