One area where the Bills' D excelled last year: tackling

Football Outsiders charted broken tackles against the league's defenders, and many of the Bills came out near the top. In particular, Kelvin Sheppard was one of the best-tackling linebackers in the league (you know, when he actually fought through a block and put himself in the right position to actually make a tackle). In all, the Bills' D was one of the better-tackling units in the NFL. Somewhat surprising given how horrible they were at everything else...

Your title is misleading because the analysis points to broken tackles.

The problem with the Bills defense, broken tackles aside, is that offenses were ripping off big chunks of yards. This was especially true early in the season. On paper the Bills should have had one of the best front four in. The league. The results clearly did not reflect what was on paper.

At the end of the day the Bills were soft in the middle and could hardly set and edge.

Talk about missing the point.

Is there a stat on how many tackles we made while chasing an opponent from behind?

Which didn't happen often, per the article.

"Perhaps Sheppard had so few broken tackles because he couldn't get near enough to the ballcarrier to qualify".

As for the everything else part:

"This is a defense that couldn't really do much right. Their expensive defensive line couldn't pressure the quarterback and was easily pushed around in the running game. The cornerbacks struggled and the linebackers were nothing special."

Excellent tackling, like 20 yards past the line of scrimmage...
