Fezmid
I'll shoot that thing when it prints out a prosthetic hand to go with it. So you'll be posting video of you shooting it next week? http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/02/robohand-how-cheap-3d-printers-built-a-replacement-hand-for-a-five-year-old-boy/

Would the production or possession of 3D printed guns be any more or less illegal than, say, the possession or production of meth? Because you know, prohibition has a proven track record
Joe Miner
I'm not up to date on metal detector technology. But even if the gun can't be detected by a metal detector, wouldn't it still pick up the ammo?

Fezmid
So we just need to make them carry a mandatory magazine of 10 rounds? Update to the story: The State Department demanded that the creator take the files off his website... Which is silly because it's already proliferated everywhere, but hey. http://www.neowin.net/news/state-department-forces-takedown-of-3d-gun-blueprints
Joe Miner
Update to the story: The State Department demanded that the creator take the files off his website... Which is silly because it's already proliferated everywhere, but hey. http://www.neowin.ne...-gun-blueprints From the very little I've read about this, I believe he includes a small metal bar in the gun to make it a detectable firearm. Now obviously the metal is optional, and the design doesn't require someone to put it in. But I'm not sure how it's breaking the law. And seriously, if 1 guy can make it, millions other can as well. Depending on the cost and performance, I wouldn't be surprised to see major gun manufacturers venture into this area in the future. Everyone bitched about "plastic" guns (Glocks) when they first showed up, and look at them (and all the other polymer guns) now. One thing I would be curious about is the weight of a gun like this. While lightweight sounds good for carrying around, a decent amount of heft to a gun can do wonders in making it better to actually shoot.

The surest way to get a copy of the blueprints on millions of computers is to ban it. It's like these people have never heard of the Streisand effect.
