Colts to get benefit of officiating today?

Recommended Posts

When the Colts were defeated by New England in the playoffs last year, there were so many complaints to the league from Indianapolis about the clutching and grabbing by the Patriots secondary that the pass defense rules were changed in the offseason.

The new rules definitely benefit the receivers. (IMO there was nothing wrong with the old rules -- just a problem with the refs not calling the existing rules as written.)

Not only have Payton Manning and his receivers taken advantage of the rule changes this year, the officiating is cracking down on Denver, specifically safety John Lynch. Lynch was recently fined $75,000 for his hit on Colts tight end Dallas Clark, and threatened with ejection the next time he makes what they term an illegal hit.

NFL won't take back threat of Lynch ejection

Coach Mike Shanahan said he thought the Colts were partaking in gamesmanship by calling the league after the game and urging Lynch's suspension.

IMO this will have the officials keeping an eye on everything defenses do against Colt receivers in the playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised to see today's game come down to calls in the Colts' favor.

BTW, it's time for them to stop blaming others for their failure to get the job done in the playoffs. Just shut up and do it.
