I never know who to give to in these situations. Who has health insurance and such and don't need the money and who really does?

It sounds ilke Jeff Bauman was just working at Costco, so he might need the money and is a goddam hero - but i have the feeling everybody thinks that and he'll be set.

Anybody have any ideas?

Well, my first thought is the One Fund Boston, since that can be distributed to those when it's needed. And right now I've only seen 13 or so victim pages, but we know there's a lot more than that.

I do --- none of them. There will be an avalanche of money thrown at a handful of people. Meanwhile, hundreds of worthwhile local charities that impact people's lives but don't have the power to generate profits for the media will continue to be underfunded. Donate to one of them instead.

Actually, thankfully he was working for Costco and not Sam's Club. Costco is the anti-Walton type corporation. Costco CEO James Sinegal earns about $500k/year in salary, pays employees an average of $17/hour and provides full medical insurance coverage, and has repeatedly refused Wall Street/shareholder demands to cut salaries and benefits.

Because he worked at Costco and had coverage, most to all of Mr Bauman's medical expenses will be covered and he will not have to worry about losing everything on top of what he has lost already.

Even if he didn't have coverage, there's no way Costco wouldn't take care of his medical bills. That's PR 101 for a huge company.

I'd be interested to know your sources for the 'repeated demands' to cut salaries and benefits at Costco. That sounds greatly exaggerated.

This was the question that was on my mind this weekend. Who winds up paying for these medical expenses? I suppose at this point you could go after the bombers, but does the state/city wind up on the hook since this all happened on their streets?

There have been numerous profiles done on Sinegal over the past few years which all mention him standing up to various and constant pressures. He's become a sort of celebrity over this. Especially since his company is in direct competition with a Walton owned company.

Here's a link to a snopes article which mentions a lot of what I already have, WITH sources. http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/costcoceo.asp

It looks like I need to revise my statement of "$500k/year in salary" to "about $630k/year".

A non-specific quote from one analyst almost ten years ago isn't exacxtly "repeated demands". But I get how the 'holding off evil Wall Street like the Greeks at Thermopylae' angle adds to the story. As does your notable ommission of the $12MM the CEO made in stock options in 2011 (and add'l $16MM in 2012), I suppose.

Im not sure what youre arguing. He's still lauded as one of the most employee-friendly CEO and corporations in existence, and should be a good example of how to run your large company.

No one has any issue with him taking his $12MM in stock options when he is paying cashiers $40k/year with full benefits. That's the whole point. Companies CAN take care of their workers if they really want to. And if you're taking care of your workers properly, then no one can/will say anything about whatever you want to make. It's pretty simple really.

Jeff Bauman is not a hero. He's a victim.

Which is not a criticism of him, but a criticism of a culture that can't tell the difference between "victim" and "hero".

Exactly, now the guy in the cowboy hat that held onto Jeff's dangling artery and pinched it shut to prevent him from bleeding out, HE is a hero. And I would bet even he would say hero might be too strong of a word.

First off, I always am amazed at how people run to help during, and help with money after a tragedy like this. The dude in the hat is a hero. as is every other first responder. kudos to them for being the type of person who helps others.

second, i work at Costco, so i will chime in on them and this situation. costco may or may not help pay his bills. I would say probably. But he will ALWAYS have his job. They will go out of their way to help him. as will countless other Costco employees. Working there has ups and downs like any other company, don't get me wrong, but it definitely tends to feel like you become part of a huge family. There is a sense of togetherness that the corporation has encouraged and fostered over time. Sinegal has led the way with repeated acts of kindness, and by taking care of the employees. I have seen people donate there vacation to someone whom they have never met. I have see the Company pay life insurance benefits for someone who didnt qualify for benefits. I have seen the company pay for a College education for a family of a Deceased employee. So, i think Costco will do the right thing.

But Costco's insurance, is not as good as it used to be, especially when you compare to what the old Price Club used to be. I am sure that Mr. Bauman will have huge medical bills, but i dont worry about him paying them. especially after learning of the collection in his name.

and just for the record, i am not a manager, or paid spokesperson. I drive a forklift...
