While poking around the question of whether the Jets could be trying to include quarterback-of-all-trades Tim Tebow in the package (which would keep the Jets from cutting Tebow and seeing him sign with the Patriots), we tripped over a previously unknown nugget. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the discussions between the Jets and Bucs have included the possibility of the Buccaneers assuming the contract of quarterback Mark Sanchez.

What exactly are the Jets supposed to get from the Bucs in trade?

Trading for Sanchez is essentially career suicide. I imagine the Jets offered all of them 5 million dollars a year for life to every executive and coach on that team to agree to something like

A first (allegedly already offered by bucs) and significantly more is still being asked for is the rumor (taking Sanchez could be the big extra)

it would be a throw in, and only as a veteran backup

It would have nothing to do with the player... It's essentially the bucs buying out his contract for the jets as a bonus to NY

How in the world can Tampa have cap space for this?

Because outside of Jackson, nicks and penn they have no real contracts on the books. They have a ton of room. You can also structure revis not to crush this years cap.

tampa: "what do you want for revis?"

ny: "we want a first and a third...and you have to take sanchez."

crickets...

tampa: "we'll give you a third."

(Twenty minutes later)

Jets: "Okay, final offer. You take Sanchez and we give you Revis, a first, and a third."

Tampa: "We'll get back to you on that."
