If he's received six weeks of antibiotics, then he almost certainly has an infection involving the plate/bone in his arm. It's very hard to eradicate infections with antibiotics alone when they involve foreign materials or objects like plates. If the plate has been in a while, we usually recommend removing the plate, treating with antibiotics, waiting, and then putting a new plate back in.

My guess is they're trying to see if they can get away with not removing the plate, and hoping the infection clears with antibiotics. It's possible, but not the ideal approach. If that doesn't work (and there's a good chance of that), they'll have to remove the plate, treat again, and put it back in later.

Probably not. Usually they remove the hardware and treat with another six to eight weeks of antibiotics while keeping the arm immobilized. Then after the infection clears they can reinsert the plate as necessary

Wow...that just sucks. I wouldn't wish that on a Patriot.

Billicheat will list him as 'probable' even if he is scheduled to be on surgery table during opener.

And if Gronk were to be given a 100% clean bill of health, Belicheat would have him listed as questionable.

That's got to be a nasty infection - if anyone in the world can fight off infection well it's a young person in their 20s who is in excellent physical shape. As much as I hate the *Pats, I don't wish that on anyone - that's terrible.

He might be fighting off several infections.

4th surgery on the same left forearm? To me that is alarming, forget the season, to me his career could be in jeopardy at some point.

Even though I loathe the Pats, you never want to see any player deal with that.

Yea, if Gronk were smart he'd get it removed and treat before trying another plate. I don't work with human patients but healing is usually compromised in the infected area though not sure if that's the same for bone. If the bacteria worked their way down the screws it's in the bone, too. I feel sorry for him trying to push this. Hope it works out like they are planning.

It's almost certainly in the bone at this point.

He certainly caught everything in Buffalo...

He's caught a lot more in New England. And likely San Fernando Valley.

Gronkowski is battling "chronic" back pain". The tight end recently underwent an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Gronkowski will be sent to spine specialist Robert Watkins after next week's forearm surgery. No word if break dancing caused or help with this condition. As the injuries pile up and his long-term future is checkered with red flags, Gronkowski should feel fortunate to have secured a six-year, $54 million extension last offseason.

There's a reason he wasnt a slam dunk draft pick, and it wasnt lack of upside.

i feel for the guy. antibiotic resistant infections are some scary $%!@. as far as the what it means to the bills, if our outlook depends in any way on whether gronk is healthy... we're gonna suck again anyway.
