ChevyVanMiller Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Interesting article on Woodson's plight. What age do you think is too old to give a guy a shot? Obviously, I speak of skill positions like CB, WR, etc. I understand that kickers and punters regularly play to a much older age than other positions. http://espn.go.com/b...to-stay-patient
Ramius Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Sounds like its more of a case of how much he's asking for (at his age) than just simply that he's 36.
Juice_32 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 it look like 36 might be the answer to your question.
truth on hold Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 If he hadn't obviously lost a step or two it might be a different story too.
OldTimer1960 Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 I think it is his age combined with his salary expectations that is the problem. If he was willing to play for pay commensurate with his declined (or perceived declined) skill level, then he'd have a job already. Teams can't afford to pay for his past-productivity in the salary cap age.
NoSaint Posted April 5, 2013 Posted April 5, 2013 Yup. At league minimum he'd be snapped up in seconds. As would many guys out there... It's perceived value from each side, plus some negotiating tactics that leave guys sitting.
bkep32 Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 the dude is still one of the best at the corner blitz
QCity Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 the dude is still one of the best at the corner blitz Well he plays safety now and yes I would love to see him starting over Searcy for us. This guy still wants big $$$.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 All players at positions where athleticism is a key factor start to drop off in their early 30's. The canton bound ones are so good they still make a difference at 33/34. 36 is ancient for a DB... Even Deion was passed around in his mid 30's like cheap floozy.. Just the move from db to safety clearly shows noticeable deterioration was being accommodated, add in the $ and well you have your Woodsons, ocho's and other former all pros looking for a jersey.
Meathead Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 swear to god when i read that title i thought it said 'woodson cant get a stiff', which would have been a LOT different
boyst Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 Hands down he is the best athlete I've ever seen play the game. Is take him on this team at a fair price. 36 is not too old for his offerings. His price is too much for his offerings.
H2o Posted April 6, 2013 Posted April 6, 2013 His age is catching up with him to a certain extent, but I believe the injuries over the past few seasons are probably keeping some teams away as well.
Marv Levy Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 Screw it, make him and Brian Urlacher a offer not too ridiculous and this sorry Bills team would at least have some Vets who played in BIG games and can still contribute. Just my opinion.
San Jose Bills Fan Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 swear to god when i read that title i thought it said 'woodson cant get a stiff', which would have been a LOT different Freud would say, ah never mind.
Nitro Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 (edited) Father time gets all athletes but at differing ages. Woodson lost a step last year. He might get picked up as an elder statesman type for a young secondary. Back up Free Safety. No longer has the speed for CB. Edited April 7, 2013 by Nitro
KeisterHollow Posted April 7, 2013 Posted April 7, 2013 The NFL is perhaps the most competitive industry in America - where there is no loyalty to anything or anyone save for production. If Woodson was still elite he'd be getting paid as such. The fact that he isn't suggests that he's either asking for too much, or for too long a contract. It's not uncommon for kids coming out of college to hit the NFL by surprise - but it IS uncommon for FA's to surprise the NFL by proving everyone wrong. Usually FA's get OVERPAID - not underpaid.
