Before the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise faces a new threat. Before John Reid and his Indian friend take on bad guys in the old west. Before the Wolfpack have another hangover. Before we see what Mike & Sully's life was like in college. Before Tony Stark takes on the Mandarin. Before zombies take over the world. Before the Wolverine makes a quest to Japan. Before a father and son crash land on an apocalyptic Earth. Before more fast and furious vehicles hit the road again. Before Frank Moses reunites his team of operatives. Before an alien being from Krypton becomes a guardian of the good people of Earth. Before Gru, his minions and the girls are back in action. Before Kick-Ass & Hit-Girl battle Red Mist. And before Earth's defense force of giant robots take on an alien race of giant monsters.....The Spring Season of 2013 comes to a close.

The month of April is not as fierce with the big titles that March brought us. Instead, a modest eight titles open nationwide this month. Holdovers from March will attempt to soak up as much cash as they can before the big tentpole titles of this years Summer Season take over. Interestingly enough, April kicks-off their month with a re-release of an historic summer blockbuster.

20 years ago, Steven Spielberg & Universal Studios, the same team that brought us "Jaws" in 1975, teamed up again for a film they hoped would produce similar results. That film was "Jurassic Park". Now it is being re-released for it's anniversary and also gets the 3D treatment. The movie had a tremendous impact. It brought fans a movie that many had been wanting to see from Spielberg in a long time, made Jeff Goldblum a star, raised the level of special effects, made dinosaurs "cool" again, made studio executives eager to see what author Michael Crichton would write next, and it was also the first film to be recorded in digital sound. Remember hearing that DTS trailer in theatres for the first time? So prepare to return to Jurassic Park and experience it in it's 3D glory.

Oh yes, there is new stuff coming out as well.

Tom Cruise headlines "Oblivion". A veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself. Also starring Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough & Olga Kurylenko.

The baseball biopic "42", is about the life story of Jackie Robinson and his history-making signing with the Brooklyn Dodgers under the guidance of team executive Branch Rickey. Starring Chadwick Boseman, T.R. Knight & Harrison Ford.

In the horror re-make "Evil Dead", Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. The evil presence possesses them until only one is left to fight for survival. Starring Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas & Elizabeth Blackmore.

Mark Wahlberg & Dwayne Johnson headline the Michael Bay directed "Pain & Gain". A trio of bodybuilders in Florida get caught up in an extortion ring and a kidnapping scheme that goes terribly wrong. Also starring Rebel Wilson, Anthony Mackie, Ken Jeong, Tony Shalhoub & Ed Harris.

In the delayed ensemble comedy "The Big Wedding", A long-divorced couple fakes being married as their family unites for a wedding. Starring Robert DeNiro, Katherine Heigl, Diane Keaton, Amanda Seyfried, Topher Grace, Ben Barnes, Susan Sarandon & Robin Williams.

In "Scary Movie 5", A couple begin to experience some unusual activity after bringing their newborn son home from the hospital. With the help of home-surveillance cameras and a team of experts, they learn they're being stalked by a nefarious demon. Starring Simon Rex, Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen & Lindsay Lohan.

Finally in "Home Run", A pro ball player with a substance abuse problem is forced into rehab in his hometown, finding new hope when he gets honest about his checkered past, and takes on coaching duties for a misfit Little League team. Starring Scott Elrod, Dorian Brown & Charles Henry Wyson.

Lou Taylor Pucci also has a gem of an indie coming out on the 5th titled "The Story of Luke" about an man on the autism spectrum who takes his grandfather's last words to him to heart: to find a job and find a girl --- two things that aren't easy for people with ASD. Also stars Seth Green, Kristin Bauer and Cary Elwes (he of "Princess Bride" and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"). Coinciding with Autism Awareness Month, this movie is holding a special place in my own regard having been told by people who have studied and work in that sphere that they have "no doubt" that I have mild Asperger's / PDD-NOS. It does explain a lot of things with me.... Anyway, this movie has been winning a number of smaller film festival awards among both the critic and audience votes. It has a limited release today, 5 April, and is also available in several formats, including VOD and on iTunes. The autism spectrum is wide --- as wide and as varied as each individual on it. Everybody has challenges. We all have something. We all have a story. This is Luke's.

I'm very curious about 42. While watching the commercials lately, I've realized that I really know nothing about Jackie Robinson. I know he broke the color barrier, but why did it end up being him. I'll check that one out at some point.

I think it would be hilarious (and awful) if they decided to re-make Army of Darkness.

I've said this before and I need to say it again Jurrasic Park was one of the worst movies big movies I've seen. Now I have not seen a lot of movies but I do remember walking out after and asking my wife "is it me or did that suck?" She confirmed in her mind it wasn't me.

Question. If you hate it so much why have you seen it with her ten time? Oh that's right she's your girlfriend not your wife. Sorry.

BTW my wife and I have such similar tastes and it's great. We are both huge music fans but have walked out of every musical we've seen and looked at each other and said.....SUCKED!! Unfortunately I do reward events for my staff and they always seem to want to do musicals. Wicked? Worst piece of crap I ever saw. It was like they gave a fantastic set and costumes to a traveling high school drama club and said "ok, you come up with the score, plot and perform it."

Being a huge fan of music does not necessarily mean you will love musicals. They are two different things.

In a way I get what you are saying. I enjoyed "Jurassic Park", but what's so great about it to me are the dinosaurs and Jeff Goldblum. Aside from that, the movie as a whole is alright. I don't think it sucks, but I am more forgiving of movies than you.

Now the book version of "Jurassic Park" is very good, but I've had to learn that books and movies are not the same.

I have to ask you Chef, what was the last "Big Movie" you actually enjoyed?

The problem with me is I can't dispel disbelief in movies. I'm much better with books. Last big movie I saw and enjoyed? Let me get back to you on that one.

Yep. One example, "Clear And Present Danger" by Tom Clancy. Liked the book, hated the movie. It's like they took the basic premise of the book, then made a movie without checking the book again.

One movie/book combo I liked, that others hate, Battlefield Earth. For those that have only seen the movie, it covers only the first half of the book. I can't think of anyway to make an interesting movie out of the second half of the book, since all the action takes place in the first half.

BTW that's why my wife did not like the movie. She said the book was very good and the movie was a big letdown after the book. And I'm still working on the last "Big Movie" I saw and liked. As I've mentioned many times we're not big movie fans so I don't watch "Big Movies". I asked the wife and she couldn't come up with one either. I jokingly said The Wizard of Oz and she said that'd make me sound gay. I told her I dispelled the gay thing by mentioning how much I hate musical.

Hey, nothing wrong with "The Wizard of Oz", that's a classic. I still hope for something a bit more recent.

What will happen first? You'll remember a big movie that you liked, or the Bills will win the Super Bowl?

Posted (edited)

Not to get too off track, but I'll mention that the only "musical" movie I've liked to this point in time was the Gene Wilder "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."

I might have said the Wizard of Oz as well, if I hadn't been forced to watch it thirty-eleven times in the past 3 years by my niece, God bless her.... It just gets, well, you know.

No "The Story of Luke" in the indies?

I just did an edit and posted "The Story of Luke" in the Indies post.

I left it out originally since you had already posted the description & trailer earlier in this thread, but I now have it in the calendar.

Posted (edited)

Oblivion stunk. Corny, drawn out, trite, not engaging ... and I'm totally sick of the wise old philosopher Morgan freeman character. only highlights were the lovely Olga Kurylenko and anti-drone sub-theme
