And bags of sand? Really? All the billions dumped into anti-satellite technology and Star Wars, and none of that was necessary because blowing up bags of sand is an effective weapon? Seriously? Do you ever think before you post?

Sorry, I'm just in a giddy mood I guess, but this was the first thing that came to mind reading DCTom's rant

"Mr President.........We cannot allow a Bags of Sand gap ! ! !"

North Korean's conventional arsenal is of little worry to the U.S. I am concerned, however, that they may attack us with urine, ruining all our pristine snow, or poison our remaining birds, leaving us nothing to eat on Tuesday. Left with no food and no clean snow with which to make coffee, North Korea will have little problem rolling over our ragged defenses with their state of the art 1970s Soviet tech.

Although the notion of being a North Korean colony is scary at first, how much worse can it really be than living in a tent city with the homosexuals?

"A couple of EMPs in space" is fiction. An EMP is caused by ionization of the atmosphere by gamma radiation, it doesn't come directly from the warhead itself.

if you don't care about a particular satellite the question is could you put up enough sand/metal pellets to trigger something like Kessler syndrome

as for the other stuff I suggest you check out Starfish Prime I'll concede EMP is not proper and replace it with high altitude nuclear detonation

You're an idiot. Shut up.

yeah one thing most people don't realize is how satellite based our military is - imagine our military without space based GPS, communications, or reconnaissance, a couple emps in space or hell blowup bags of sand in space and create a huge debris field

You know what you think about posting here? You know you're going to get banned. You think it's alright. You've posted a long time. You've had some good posts, and some posters that have even said they loved you. You did some trolling that you thought made a difference, that you thought was honourable. You even complimented an idiot poster in another thread for saying something funny.

And then you see them post this.

....

I look at North Korea 2 ways when stuff like this comes up, either:

1. They are out of food again, so it's time to start up the "Nuke -->UN pussification--> Food" machine

2. Well, maybe this time is different because: you can't build your entire economy, culture, and society on the premise that attacking South Korea is the ONLY goal...and not actually have to do it...sooner or later.

I give them credit in that they have been able to counterfeit our money, and extort food from the entire world for a very long time, and make that work. However, this kid in charge now? He has grown up completely in the Big Lie that is socialism.

Maybe he actually believes it?

Aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis docks in Singapore

The Nimitz-class nuclear-poweredsupercarrier arrived in Singapore for a port visit on Monday after operating in and around the Arabian Gulf the past five months.

Probably headed to Korean Peninsula

Worry about North Korea? Are you guys crazy? Have you not seen the success of our Sally Fields Foreign Policy? The world loves us now. They really love us.

Besides, does anyone actually think China is going to let their pals in NK bomb a country that owes them over a trillion dollars?

Shut up, shut up, shut up. :wallbash: You give those of us who actually know things a splitting headache.

Stennis just finished an eight month deployment in the Arabian Sea and is on her way to Bremerton for a much-delayed refit. A stopover in Singapore means less than nothing - it's completely normal.

BO's man CAVE

Recent announcements of American military deployments in response to belligerent statements by North Korea may have contributed to escalating tensions between the two countries, Pentagon officials told CNN on Thursday in explaining an effort to reduce U.S. rhetoric about the reclusive state.

"We accused the North Koreans of amping things up, now we are worried we did the same thing," one Defense Department official said.

"It only takes being wrong once. And I don't want to be the secretary of defense who was wrong once. So we will continue to take these threats seriously. I hope the North will ratchet this very dangerous rhetoric down," Hagel said Wednesday.

We're sorry! Please keep sending the paper cups of coffee to our homeless.

One of the few things that deters nuclear capable nations from going all Strangelove is the idea of M.A.D. (mutually assured destruction).

"You launch yours, we'll launch ours; it will be deleterious to us both."

But when the leadership of a rogue nation has no predilection towards self-preservation, the psychological barrier that M.A.D. represents is no longer an inhibitor.

And that is a scary prospect.

I once had a conversation with Dino Brugioni (singularly the best and most deeply intellectual geopolitical conversation that I've ever had) at a UVA event and he was very big on the m.a.d. idea and the psychology around reciprocal destruction.

He said that two rational actors would never push the button because they would understand that such an action would inevitably result in their own demise as well. He said that the real psychology that led to Cuban missle crises being averted was less Kennedy's patience under pressure, but rather Nash equilibrium 101.

The problem is that I'm not sure that Pyongyang is comprised of a bunch of rational actors. I don't think that there is a Nash equilibrium principle with them.

Therefore, I think that the U.S. should go in heavy militarily and relieve any temptation that they might have.

A key part of M.A.D. is the word 'mutually'. North Korea has no ability to destroy the US (and a doubtful ability to destroy South Korea). There is no way that a North Korean attack on either South Korea, Japan or the US plays out without North Korea ceasing to exist (one way or another).

Does NK even have the capability to mount one of their 5 warheads onto a missile of any range? I can't seem to find any evidence that suggests they have any rocket capable of delivering one of their warheads.

I'm also wondering what they named their first nukes. I'm guessing in the spirit of Oppenheimer and co., its probably something like "Chubby Man with Bad Haircut and Inferiority Complex".

Hasn't North Korea been boasting that they have the nuclear capability to reach the mainland US?

Read somewhere about a KN-08 (or some permutation of those letters/numbers) a few weeks back. I'll try to find the article. Apparently it is long range capable and can reach the mainland. Also unconfirmed reports say that Pyongyang some time ago figured out the nuclear miniaturization process to actually equip the long range missles.

We need to go in heavy militarily.

Boasting is the key word, they haven't a prayer of reaching the US mainland. For years yet. They'd be lucky to get one across the bay to Japan...

They've been boasting that capability, but most of their rocket tests have ended in spectacular failure. Recently they were able to put a satellite in orbit (which immediately spun out of control), but even with the range that this rocket demonstrated, "experts" say the rocket lacks the power to deliver one of their primitively huge (can you use the word primitive while discussing nuclear weapons?) warheads. From what I've been able to dig up, North Korea can likely deliver a warhead within a 1,000 km range and even those missiles aren't very reliable.

Hopefully someone with more command of the facts and a hard-on for military hardware and physics can weigh in. Do we know anyone like that?

Is 1000 km with the range of even U.S. territories?

I don't know much on this topic outside of what I read about North Korea every few weeks online.

This is my concern:

"After a speech in Singapore, Mr. Gates said, "With the continued development of long-range missiles and potentially a road-mobile intercontinental ballistic missile and their continuing development of nuclear weapons, ... North Korea is in the process of becoming a direct threat to the United States."
