5 sacks last year from an interior DL with a mediocre (as play indicated) supporting cast.

Not to be a heretic or anything, but....

No question, Williams is a nice player. But I've focused on him quite a bit the last few years and noticed that he seems to "guess" a lot about making penetration from the DT position. He looks great when he guesses right and shoots the proper gap, but also takes himself out of the play an inordinate number of times when he guesses wrong, opening up a massive hole for RBs to run through and exposing his LBs to OGs blocking on the next level.

In other words, the positive plays seem to get offset by the negatives...which is why the inside running game has been so effective on the Bills for several years now.

Now I know everyone likes Kyle because he's a high motor "bowling ball with knives sticking out of him" player (a description a scout pinned on him in his draft year), but it's maddening to watch these huge inside holes open up and see Williams slanting on the other side of where the play is going.

Has anybody else seen this, or am I just imagining things?

Kyle Williams was a pro bowl alternate this year, I'm guessing that some people in the league think he's pretty good.

ok, the pro bowl is a joke now as it is. Being an alternate means even less. Doesn't mean anything.

I seem to remember every team in the NFL heeping praise upon Williams...I'd be willing to be that if he were to hit the open market, he'd be a day one signing. 5 sacks last year from an interior DL with a mediocre (as play indicated) supporting cast...with a partially torn Achilles in the final 10 games...yeah, he blows...like yo mamma suckaaaaaaaa. (j/k, just sayn')

i doubt he's got any real love in the open market. He's almost 30 (according to one of the posts below, too lazy to look it up) and coming off the last few seasons of having surgery and not looking as good as a few years ago.

I

So you are basically saying either he is done, or will be great...Nice.

i already explained my argument. See previous posts.

Still, I'd like to know what exactly is making you think he "is done"? The dude came off of a very serious injury last year (detached achilles) and played pretty well IMO, he had 5 sacks. The injury he PLAYED THROUGH last year, is considered less serious, and from the sounds of it he is expected to be healthy by training camp. I just don't see any evidence that would suggest this guy "is done".

see above reply---^

He's only 29 BTW.

Just like my feelings towards ANY football player at any position. 29 is ancient. There are some that make it past that point and are effective. Most start the downside of their careers. After having 2 seasons of injuries and surgeries, I'm guessing the latter.

Haha really? You still haven't given any reasoning at all as to why you think he is done. Others have given reasons to counter your comment. You seem to just be saying it for the sake of saying it. If you think 29 is ancient, that's your opinion, but I think many would call that being in their prime.

The guy missed time in 2011, but has been one of the most consistent players on this team since he's been a Bill, including last year even playing through injury (described as less serious as the previous injury).

he is 29 which is getting up there in years for Pro Football players. He is coming off seasons where he's had surgery and multiple injuries and he benefited from having Mario and Marcel line up next to him all year.

Of course there's no proof that he's done. We will see when we see is about all I can say. But ill put him in the same grouping as Freddy, Evans, Barnett, McGee, Roscoe, Spikes. All of them have shown that nearing the 30 year mark with multiple injuries can cause serious problems.

Hope I'm wrong, and time will tell but I thought we should have traded him when he had value. I'm calling it now, by the end of this year, Kyle Williams will have ZERO VALUE on this team besides being just another guy that we can call a starter but that's about it. Well be looking for his replacement by next season. Again, hope I'm wrong and we will see.

Does anyone have an update?

The gouge was he'd need the surgery this off season, can't find anything about if he had it or not, how he's recovering etc.

Mahvelous, dahlinks, two pages and no gouge, just a lot of postering and opinions.

Darryl Talley was asked in an interview last year who is his favorite current Bill, his response "Kyle Williams" and that's a man who knows something.

When he's healthy, he's a beast but I'd like to know he's taking steps to get himself healthy. HIs problem isn't exactly a torn achilles, it's a bone spur rubbing the achilles. The trick with this is to get it fixed (detach the un-torn achilles, grind down the bone, reattach) *before* the achilles tears wholly or in part.

Does anyone know if Kyle W had off season surgery on his other Achilles tendon? I know he stated it was giving him the same type of pain his surgically repaired tendon had. Sorry if this topic has been already addressed.

Posted

Since we haven't heard anything, the answer would be no he hasn't had it yet. And at this point, it's doubtful he does have it because that would mean his 2013 season would be done.

Posted

he's been injury plagued the last few years. really has to get healthy. i just hope he doesn't spend another season being hurt and ignoring another injury that should've been dealt with before.

He wasn't practicing yesterday, so one of a few things are going on;

1. He had surgery and he is slowly coming back to 100%

2. The injury is cropping up again, or

3. Something new is bothering him.

And speaking of injuries and though it may be nothing, but Stevie did all this offseason conditioning and tweaks his back on day 1. Is this going to be his nagging injury this year?

Bump.

Because his achilles was mentioned as a reason for his drop off in play in 2012 and surgery was talked about by the team, I think this issue needs to be addressed by the team. Either it wasn't as bad as they thought, or he had a repair done, or the issue was initially overstated. Regardless, I think the club should make a statement. Then, it's instantly a non-issue until such time as they trot it out as a reason why he's not performing as expected in 2013. If that happens, then the hounds of hell will be unleashed on him and the front office.

Lord help us all if that happens. I wish him well and hope he has a banner year.

Go Bills!

I agree. Anyone join me in putting it up as a question for Chris Brown on Fan Friday next week? If a bunch of us ask, maybe he'll answer.

That's a good idea. They should confront this issue, and put it behind them... for now. Because it'll be hell if he really needed it and didn't get it done and his play suffers as a result. I think that was his MO for the first achilles surgery he had.

I've said it a few times that I don't see where Kyle fits in this defense and that he might be the odd man out

If he isn't a NT or a DE where does he fit? The Bills were supposed to be so tough up the middle last year with Kyle and Dareus but ended up giving up most yards rushing between the tackles in the league. Can't just blame them but can't just put the blame on Shep or Wanny either

Trade him while he has some trade value...a 4th round pick?? Like that we get a draft pick and save some more cap space.

If KW was on another team we'd all be drooling over him because he was a pro bowl caliber DT and if we signed him he might regain form. But since he's a Bill we know he "sucks"

Ask Wanny; he'll just tell you they needed to work on their "run fits" more.

No, I think you're right. I had the nerve to criticize Williams' play during the '12 season....judging by the responses, you'd have figured that I had criticized Mother Teresa. He's just one of those guys that many fans choose to wear blinders while watching him play.

Any injured player struggles. Blinders ? possibly some do. i could suggest that that is a two way street.

Kyle hasn't been "plagued" by injury.Eric Wood is plagued by injury. Kyle W had the original problem achilles/bone spur repaired before it was torn and was fine afterwords. The surgery was succesful and the issue did not return. But then the other one appeared last year. and he played through it after cutting the back of his cleats ( again ) to lessen the irratation. maybe he should not have played ? his burst was way off but the whole team sucked so whatever.

If the other achilles is repaired by that same specialist Doc down in the carolinas he should be good to go. 29 is a great age to get fitted up and i expect alot from the defensive line rotation especially since that old man Branch has joined up!! How old is Mario ?

by the way the achilles problem was genetic not a football injury.

Blinders? What blinders? You mean the "he made the pro bowl last year" blinders? I guess the coaches and players who voted him into the pro bowl are wearing blinders too.
