Kirby Jackson Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Actually he'd be a high risk, high reward player. Unless he was a low paid addition. That is the assumption that I am making. The FA left (for the most part will be a better value)
Dr. Trooth Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) It was a classy charity move. Even when Davis was healthy he wasn't much of a factor. He was a lot more sizzle than steak. With a torn achilles, his sizzle is gone and even less steak. Bottom line, if he passes a physical, accepts the veteran minimum, and understands he's only coming in to compete for a job... no guarantees, then ok. Edited March 24, 2013 by Dr. Trooth
CSBill Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 we need a TE, sign him (for a fair price--make it incentive laden)

You don't fly your 'team' to the player as 'a classy charity move.' 60 receptions two years ago, 25 in 7 games last year doesn't live up to the hype he entered the league with, but he's got enough sizzle.

Not sure I agree with this...he was averaging 4 catches for 50 yards per game through 6 weeks of 2012, then he was lost for the season. Buffalo could use that kind of production from a TE
BillnutinHouston Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Here's something to think about, however (sigh): http://www.washingto...-club-incident/ http://www.washingto...ining-order.php Regarding his accuser: “It’s just all made up and flagellant,” Davis told the judge during his closing argument (he served as his own attorney). Here's a guy who decided to serve as his own defense lawyer, then calls the charges against him "flagellant". Look up that word to see how intellectually challenged this man is.

RyanC883 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 We need a TE. This is a good TE to add. We have blocking TE's. A good TE is a great addition for a young QB, or TJ.
Omar Little Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 So he's a moron and off-field problem waiting to happen, and he's coming off an Achilles' tear. Bring him in!
SBUffalo Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Would be an outstanding pickup if he comes cheap like I expect he would.
3rdand12 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 (edited) I gotta say that i am glad Buddy and Co. are taking a look at him. You folks have mentioned the risk so i wont. But there is a reasonable chance this guy would work out for us. marrone will be using some traditional 2 TE sets i am thinking and Davis might be the guy. Keep Lee as a blocker mauler and let Caussin fight for it in camp. Be interesting to see how this "meeting " turns out. Thanks for the post OP. I have been wondering when we would would see a move for a Vet TE ! Edited March 24, 2013 by 3rdand12
Rubes Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 If he can make it through training camp, preseason, and a few regular season games until Chandler comes back before blowing out his achilles, I guess it'd be worth it.

Stop trying to embellish his stats. He caught 59 balls 2 years ago and 24 before he was injured last year. It took him four years in the league to catch 59 balls after being hyped out of college. Now, he's coming off an achilles.... an injury in which no NFL player is ever as good as they were, let alone better. Minimum wage at best and a gift card to Anchor Bar. If he's still got it, let him prove it. If the Bills bring him in for more than that, it's a clear indicator of status quo... always dumpster diving and never learning from passt lessons.
12Kachy Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 The Bills like to over pay. Look at the McKelvin deal that will come back to haunt the team. the dude is making 5 mil a year. They did the same with Kelsey and G. Wilson. Unfortunialty the team will be paying Wilson this year along with Fitzmoney. If they do a deal cheap I say do it, they also need another WR cheap. Lyold, DHB someone to take the pressure off Johnson. Most teams could double triple coverage Johnson last year because everyone else was so crappy.
Trader Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Encouraging info, but those achilles injuries are really bad news. They need their medical staff to clear him and to see him working out, running, catching passes before spending money on someone with that kind of injury. This looks like a move that would be a benefit in 2014 and not 2013.

Then stop trying to diminish his production without context. It never occurred to you that the years he had little production the veteran guy ahead of him was catching 75-85 balls a year? The one year Cooley got hurt, Davis came in and played very well, starting ten games catching about 50 balls and 6 TDs.

You make it out like he was only catching 17 balls a season prior to catching over 50. He caught 48 his second year in the league. Also let's not forget he was playing behind a pretty good te at the time in Chris Cooley who had 83 receptions in Fred Davis's rookie year. When Cooley was injured in 2009 Davis had 48 receptions starting the final 9 games of the season. When Cooley came back in 2010 Davis's production went down. If you want to nitpick the how's and why's go right ahead. Just don't overlook he was playing behind an elite te. Not every team with 2 good te's is NE who's gonna get each of them over 50 receptions a year. The only thing I'll agree with you here is him coming off his Achilles injury and the money, However assuming Davis is healthy and you want to forecast stats. We're looking at a guy who average wise will get you 40 receptions a year a little over 500 yards and a couple td's. Not really dumpster diving. Should we expect Tony gonzalez, antonio gates, gronkowski, witten type stats? Hardly. Would a combination of Davis/Chandler give the Bills there first legit duo of tight ends in over 20 years? Damn straight it would. Nothing about modernizing yourself to NFL offenses is "dumpster diving"

The original reports of the McKelvin deal were inflated. He making closer to 4m a year, and considering he's one of the best PR/KR in the game, and what CBs are paid in the NFL, he could be considered a decent deal if not a bargain.
