The Avett Brothers - Why you should hear them if you haven't

Recommended Posts

Avett Brothers saturday night! should be an awesome show with Trombone Shorty opening! Might also pick up tickets to the Walkman and Arctic Monkeys while I am there. Could be a great week of music with Robert Randolph playing World Cafe Live in Wilmington also next week.

not sure I am going to make the walkmen/arcade fire...i am a huge fan of the walkmen and have seen them 6-7 times in the past couple years, arcade fire is the current buzz band but i really haven't listened to much to them yet

What a set! Highlighted by three of my favorite Avett Brothers songs...Down With the Shine, A Father's First Spring, and Laundry Room. I'm jealous. Saw a great Avett show in Canandaigua, NY in July. Grace Potter was awesome too. Such a force on stage, and very easy on the eyes.

http://www.will-johnson.com/tour/

I've recommended him before- will Johnson (of centromatic and about a dozen other bands) is doing another living room tour. Literally fans volunteer a house, you sit on their couch and he plays acoustic in the living room. In buffalo on this one- buy tickets. (Also Philly, pooj)

Here's an example:

nice...heard an interview of linda rondstadt recently where she said that her favorite listening experiences were in her living room listening to friends wanting her opinion. if only they wanted my opinion in my living room! sadly, she's lost her voice to parkinsons. her last album was modulated to fit what she had left. the story was on npr if anyone's interested. I hear alot in that song...paul simon, frightened rabbit, vampire weekend, mumford. It sounds good...keep reporting back.

ok, then: amber rubarth does some nice gypsy jazz and did a song called novacaine where percussion was provided by a tap dancer. worked very well. lucinda williams was drunk, unpracticed or both - phoned it in. disappointing.

Lucinda just did back to back nights here at tipitinas last week. Inducted in the Louisiana music hall of fame the second night - didnt hear any poor reviews, whatever that leads you to decide (likely well practiced)

then, i don't know. saw her walking through the festival in front of us well before her set and she seemed fine. opened with "can't let go" and it was plain awful. slow yet still out of time and her voice wavered all over the place. my wife said let's go or maybe "we can let go" half way through the song but we listened some more and it didn't get any better. walking away, she sounded worse. maybe,it's in comparison to the young up and comers that are hungry, tight and and highly motivated. maybe it was just a bad night or she needed some rest. maybe it's us. she was the least impressive act i saw last night.

great tribute to levon helm tonight. they couldn't fit anymore artists on the stage. at least 30 with a full brass section and the entire crowd joining in for "tennessee" and "the night they drove old dixie down".
