Jake Long signs with the Rams.

4 years.....up to 36m.

4 pro-bowls(1 all-pro) in 5 years.

The Dolphins invested the #1 pick overall in him in 2008......and he actually lived up to potential.

It's not like the Dolphins couldn't afford 9m/year.....they just paid 12m/year for a 1 time pro-bowler who only had 836 yards last year.

Only "up to" 9m/year. Puts into perspective a team willing to pay 7.8m/year to an OG that hasn't made a pro-bowl.

Seriously though.....I think the Dolphin's moves this off-season are likely to set them backwards in the next few years.

Go Bills!

That's good news for the Rams and for Sam Bradford. One of their many problems was a 1st round LT who did NOT live up to potential.

It does not seem to make sense for the Dolphins. A WR is no use if your QB doesn't have time to throw to him

Have to factor his health history and durability in why he even hit FA in the first place.

Is it that big of a concern?

He played 74 of a possible 80 games so far in his career.

They were talking about him on Sirius. Said he looked awful last year. Probably because he was playing hurt. But awful in a contract year is going to hurt you...

Dols fans weren't happy with his play last year. The question is whether Jonathan Martin can handle the LT spot. If he can't, that negates all their off-season moves.

So if they can't get mediocre LT play this year, all of their off-season moves are negated?

Anyway, Long is another monument to the folly of picking LT that high in the first round.

It is if they can't protect their qb. Wallace may be fast deep threat, but not even he can get deep if his qb gets sacked in 1 or 2 seconds

I'm finding that comment quite odd.

Discounting QB.....what positions do you think are not folly to be picked that high in the first round?

CB, safety or RB hasn't watching the Bills all these years taught you anything?

Actually.....when the Bills have picked anywhere close to the #1 spot we took DT & OT.

Edit: Since Bruce Smith that is.

Well, LT is the amongst lowest impact positions a bad team can draft that high. Alone, he can't possibly make a huge difference--he is part of an ensemble of other guys all doing the same thing. The Browns and the Fins did this in the last 10 years and they passed up on Peterson and Ryan to do so. Years later, both teams still are bad, the picks had zero ultimate impact, and the guys they passed on would have had much more impact on their offenses. They both thought they were solving a problem--finding the guy who would "protect their QB". They solved nothing. Now Jake Long is let go...

What was the last SB winner to pick an LT in the top 5?

Yes, injury/health concerns were the biggest factors in his FA interest. He finished the last two seasons on IR.

phins fan's view

"The Dolphins want to bring Long back, but don't want to pay him elite money like he was getting on his rookie contract. They are worried about his apparent slip in playing level over the past two years, mostly due to injuries."

NFL.com on last year's IR.

"For the second consecutive season, Miami Dolphins left tackle Jake Long will end his season on injured reserve.

Long landed on IR late last season with a torn biceps muscle.

The injury concludes perhaps the worst season of Long's career."

This. There are levels below mediocre.

There's a thought that his body is breaking down even if he hasn't had a catastrophic injury early in a season yet. That he is permanently playing hurt, essentially, from the wear and tear.
