The Warden
http://www.nationalreview.com/comment/frie...00501070750.asp "Since its first broadcast in 1991, al-Manar (which means "the beacon" in Arabic) has grown from a handful of employees to 300. It went from using a broadcast signal that barely made it outside Beirut to a 24-hour satellite station with global reach, broadcasting news, docudramas, political talk shows, sports events, and even music videos. It advertises itself as "The Station of Arabs and Muslims."" "The French government, it would appear, is already on board. Shortly before the State Department's move, France's highest administrative court banned al-Manar, ordering the satellite company broadcasting it there (one of three satellite companies carrying it in Europe) to abandon the channel immediately. The French cited their hate laws and commitment to fighting anti-Semitism as reasons for the ban; in fact, it was the culmination of a year-long diplomatic campaign by Israeli minister Natan Sharansky to bring the al-Manar phenomenon to European leaders' attention." RkFast
Free speech is one thing. But hate speech is something else. and what some of these outlets pump out borderson it. Check out http://www.aljazeera.com and get a feel. Handly anything is not blamed on the U.S. or Israel and even the wildest conspiracy theories are given creedence. They are so far out there, they make the folks at MoveOn blush.
Terry Tate
Check out http://www.aljazeera.com and get a feel. Handly anything is not blamed on the U.S. or Israel and even the wildest conspiracy theories are given creedence. They are so far out there, they make the folks at MoveOn blush. 198329[/snapback] Jeffery Goldberg interviewed Al Manar's news director two years ago for a New Yorker article. Interesting quotes: I began by asking him to compare Al Manar and the most famous Arabic satellite channel, Al Jazeera. "Neutrality like that of Al Jazeera is out of the question for us," Fadlallah said. "We cover only the victim, not the aggressor. CNN is the Zionist news network, Al Jazeera is neutral, and Al Manar takes the side of the Palestinians." ... He said Al Manar's opposition to neutrality means that, unlike Al Jazeera, his station would never feature interviews or comments by Israeli officials. "We're not looking to interview Sharon," Fadlallah said. "We want to get close to him in order to kill him." ... Mansour [a video editor at the station] pressed a button, and the images disappeared from the screen. "The idea is that even if the Jews are killing us we can still kill them. That we derive our power from blood. It's saying, 'Get ready to blow yourselves up, because this is the only way to liberate Palestine.' '' The video, he said, would be shown after the next attack in Israel. He said he was thinking of calling it "We Will Kill All the Jews." I suggested that these videos would encourage the recruitment of suicide bombers among the Palestinians. "Exactly," he replied. Free speech isn't a free-for-all. Inciting violence and murder is not protected.
