K D Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 You know, there are enough WNY transplants down here in North Carolina, I bet we can get something going. Me and eball can look into it. lol clearly he meant niagara county but sure north carolina can pay for it too if they want. it's like Western NY Jr down there. i went out in charlotte with a friend of a friend and i met like 10 people from Buffalo or Rochester, no joke, and I know of plenty from around here that live in the "Triangle" area now as well. what was so great about NC that you guys all flocked down there? i've only been once but I sure couldn't figure it out
CodeMonkey Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I don't care about the location as long as it has at least a retractable dome, make building it contingent on a Super Bowl, like they did in NY to bring the money to the area. The one thing is downtown would make tailgating more difficult, I have been to 7 stadiums around the country and OP is a unique experience that we need to keep! There is much more to hosting a SB than a new stadium, dome or no dome. There are requirements for example for numbers of hotel rooms that I can't imagine Buffalo would come anywhere near. Plus is the NFL going to put it's showcase event in Buffalo NY? Stadium or no stadium, a SB in Buffalo does not seem even remotely possible to me.
Homey D. Clown Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 I really don't think there will ever be a new stadium built in WNY for the Bills, but if they ever did, I'd hope to god it wouldn't be in Niagara Falls. What a Waste that would be. This is the city of Buffalo's team, and should be used to improve the city that bears it's name, not an area with a natural resource as it's own draw. All around STUPID idea to build in Niagara Falls.
MarkyMannn Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 What if a new owner builds his own stadium, on his own land? PTR I'm great with that, but some how I expect the NFL owner to have his hand out for a bundle of free NYS taxpayer money
Mr. WEO Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Millstein owns the land south of the Casino. Plenty of space to build a stadium and whatever else. Close enough to the Rainbow bridge that Canadian fans could park or get off a bus in Canada and walk over the bridge, through customs, and to the stadium. Imagine a hotel and entertainment complex built with a stadium that featured an "NFL Experience" theme park? Imagine bowl games, Final Four, Frozen Four, an annual stadium game between the Leafs and Sabres. Forget what the Falls are now. There is huge potential there if they did things right. I would not mind a new stadium right next to the current one but you can't discount building in Niagara Falls. PTR NF is one of the most depressed and depressing cities in the northeast. There is no way the NCAA would set foot in there with a Final Four, or Bowl games. Ditto the NFL and a SB.
PromoTheRobot Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 (edited) I'm great with that, but some how I expect the NFL owner to have his hand out for a bundle of free NYS taxpayer money If said owner wants to control every aspect of the new development. Of course I'm talking about Milstein. He owns the land, he develops his own stadium/hotel/convention complex. He keeps all the revenue. This is not to say he still wouldn't go to the state/county and ask for infrastructure improvements, roads, access, etc. Even though Robert Kraft built Gillette Stadium himself Massachusetts still ponied up money to improve Route 1 next to the stadium. What is it today? The city of Niagara Falls is a dump, but so is Atlantic City, NJ. But that doesn't stop people from developing what is there. The Falls are still a world-class attraction, though the Canadian side is far more popular. But an NFL team is something Niagara Falls, Canada will never have. Millstein is moving the chess pieces as we speak. Why else does a billionaire buy up acres and acres in a forlorn tourist trap that has seen better days? The casino is one reason. The Senecas are beating the Canadian casinos at their own game, according to the Buffalo News. That is your beach head. Now add a stadium, hotel, convention space, NFL experience theme park and entertainment mall with clubs, shopping and restaurants. Now you have something worth seeing. atlbillsfan1975 Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 The American side of the Falls needs to be blown up. The stadium would be perfect. Wax museum and the Rainbow Mall and everything else over there that was built in the 60's and 70's and 80's is horrible. Detractable dome that would be able to have a view of the Falls would make it the best stadium in the NFL. Buffalo could host a SB or two with in the first 10 years. Think about it. Tha casinos the falls the Bills. It would be amazing. Which is probably why the politicians will never let it happen. For some reason Buffalo seems like it wants to slowly die.

A retractable dome, maybe an all glass wall that overlooks the falls and Canadian skyline would be awesome and absolutely worth a SB or 2 within a short period of time.

Now add a stadium, hotel, convention space, NFL experience theme park and entertainment mall with clubs, shopping and restaurants. Now you have something worth seeing. PTR It is NOW and will ALWAYS be so long as the political and "social" powers that be run that city for their own personal gain and the state continues to use it as leverage for its own gains and as political favors for do-nothings like Milstein. Read some of the political history of NF and you'll quickly realize the reason that place it a dump is because of regressive machine politics and an unwillingness to progress forward and leveraging one of the world's marvels. All one needs to do is look across the river and see what progress looks like and ask "Why can't NF, NY do that?" The reason is not because they don't know what to do or how to do it, given that Ontario has developed the perfect model, it's that they can't do it. They, politicians and their "friends," remain self interested. Remember, this is the same place where a few were convicted of firebombing a housing a few years back over some union squabble. Where you get run out of town under threat of violence if you try to work their without union labor. The problem in WNY is we have a split personality. Half recognize the true dire situation this region presents and the lack of leadership at any level to move us forward (we can only do so much as residents, taxpayers, grassroots orgganizations, block clubs fans, etc within the framework of back governence and bad laws). The other half are perpetual dreamers who think things can be better despite a 40+ year track records of decline and no facts to support change. If you think a convention center is the answer, you haven't read enough about how much of a loser propect those are... over and over and over again they under-deliver in a uber competitive convention market. If you run a major organization or trade group, you're not coming to Buffalo for your annual convention, you're going to Vegas, San Diego, Chicago, NY, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, etc. Of all the stupid silver bullet projects this region has dreamt up and failed at, convention centers are the worst idea, with casinos a close second and sports stadiums third. So the point is, Milstein isn't investing anything or moving any chess pieces. He continues to sit on his property and actually waiting for the state to invest and give him handouts, not the other way around. He's not interested in spending his money in that city, and who could blame him. So he'll continue to sit on the property, pay the taxes and claim a loss and break even. I would put the waterfront as the because of issues with the other sites: 1. The Falls is out, particularly if it's private funds. No developer/owner is going to get strong armed by labor unions and political cronies. Plus the available sites have major constraints. 2. Bethlehem is out. The environmental conditions are an issue but even more so is transportation access. Read the paper more often. There is a rail line that the county was involved in moving to make access better for one part of the site and its still an issue. You'd basically have only a two or so points of access to that entire site. 3. Downtown... where? There is limited space for a stadium and if they want to maintain tailgating, downtown doesn't work. I can say with 100% certainty that a site was looked at during the lease negotiations east of downtown. The waterfront I think would suck... too windy, too cold, even on semi-decent falls days. I'd hate a dome too. But, there is room, it would be the centerpiece of a destination and could spur other projects and investments and that's how politicians think and with state and local dollars likely, there will be a push for that site... if they stay.

Good idea about the glass wall over looking the Falls would be sweet. sort of like Indy's stadium . 65'000 seats. Still close to Buffalo but it would be in Niagara county not Erie. But Politics would mess any sort of deal up.

As an American who works for the largest hotel in Canada I can tell you that Canadians flock, by the tens of thousands, each weekend to shop in American malls. Why? Because even though the US and Canadian dollars are near par, goods in Canada are 40% higher. Crossing the border is an immediate $40 savings on a $100 purchase, Also, the new culinary school is a gem. That, coupled with the casino and Seneca hotel is a nice start on a tourist section that has a lot of available land for a new stadium. Everyone thought Cleveland was a dump before they developed the waterfront with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Same with Baltimore with the Inner-Harbor. All it takes is a little vision. If you want to solidify the Bills in WNY long-term, the Falls is the best choice for a myriad of reasons.

26CornerBlitz Posted March 19, 2013 Posted March 19, 2013 The Falcons are putting up 800 Million Dollars of their own money to fund a 1 Billion Dollar retractable roof stadium in downtown Atlanta with the rest of the $ coming from public funding. Wish that was the WNY scenario with the Bills.
