BillsVet Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 It's pretty well-known when a team contacts a player to re-sign. And typically you try to get the player under contract before the current deal is expiring, which it appears the Bills didn't do with Levitre in 2011/early 2012. I don't recall the Bills attempting to get him under contract last year, which speaks to the GM's plan. He's looking for guys who can win in the phone booth, not be mobile like other teams want in their OL. Now they can insert player A who weighs 325-335 who fits the Nix mold.
mattsox Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Are you Levitre's mother? Exactly. Wasn't a Pro Bowler. Was solid, Meh, Not worth what he's getting paid now, not by a long short for a Guard.
ny33 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 (edited) who are we going to pay the money to Merriman again????? or Mario??? So Now we have another spot to fill. Do we have 1 strength now????? What? Merriman was on a (bust of) a two-year deal with $3 million guaranteed. We'll sign, probably, a safety or CB and a guard like Brandon Moore. I wish Levitre the best, but it was a prudent decision to let him walk for $25 million in guarantees. This team, like any other in the NFL, isn't going anywhere without a quality QB. It sucks, but we have to be patient. Having a top-five guard (it's questionable if Levitre is, despite his salary) is pointless without a QB. Your points have little merit. We keep making decisions on Clements etc and end up out of the playoffs. $7M for a gurd 5 years ago was a lot, but the cap is $133 million not $88 M. Can you name one strength OL..not now DL..should have been but is not LB...we have non QB...we have none DB's we just signed McKelvin to 4 year dear for $5M per and he could not even start...but nobody complained receivers...we have 1 TE...????? got hurt the last game of the year RB....awe we finally find a strength specialist...a questionable punter and a licker most of this board wants to change (I like him) So, why not pay Levitre and keep a strength ??? FYI, the McKelvin deal is actually for $17 million over four years with $7.5 million guaranteed. That's a decent deal for his return skills alone. Edited March 13, 2013 by ny33
Snorom Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 would of loved to keep him, but $8 million is lots of coin for a G
Kelly the Dog Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Me thinks you have a bad memory. Me remembers 80-90% of the posters here saying that Jason Peters was a no good, lazy, over-rated, over-paid, Buffalo-hating bum and were happy to see his ass gone because he wasn't worth the money or headache.. Reasonable folks disagreed.
BUFFALOTONE Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 you dont pay a guard 40 mill unless he is an absolute roag grader and the best at his postion. Levitre, a nice player very versatile was neither. Move on he no longer wheres your teams jersey.
Rob's House Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Losing Levitre is a kick in the balls and the worst loss since Pat Williams. And to think that we never even contacted Levitre- disgusting I see it more like Poz. A good player who would have been nice to keep, but got paid more than he was worth by someone else.
Chicago_Mike Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Has more to do w/ the $$ doled out. Talented guy, yes... but, guard is a position that can be replaced far easier than LT.
mrags Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 The Bills never even contacted Levitre. They could of at least attempted to sign him. END OF STORY regardless of whatever bogus stories came out from the Levitre camp, your freaking high if you think we never even offered AL a contract. And if we Didnt, it must have been pretty clear that Al wanted to test FA for top dollar. Or maybe it's because Marrone doesn't like him and wants a big mailer at the position. Either way, I'm glad we Didnt overpay for a guard that the best thing we can really say about was that he was durable and never missed a game. End of story. Get over it. He's no longer a Bill.

I have no problem with the philosophy except we have soooooo many other spots we are doing that with...ie LB and QB... Brandon and crew are the new Ralph.....The 2 most consistent lineman players on either side of the ball on this team have been Levitre..??????Kelsey??Williams?? (he was hurt)....Wood...opps he was hurt to....Pears....no he was hurt...Mario...ops limp wrist... would of loved to keep him, but $8 million is lots of coin for a G Who else do you pay it to
It's in My Blood Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 When we lost 2 left tackles, Peters and the guy who could decide how to spell his name (so why should I look up the spelling), everyone was going crazy. We all said Peters was the best left tackle since Ballard. (that was crappola) Neither of those guys could stay on the field, but Levitre since day one walk on the field into position and stayed there. We have significantly weakened our team because of Brandon's budget. We do not have a cap issue, only a Ralph spending issue. Now not only do we need to fill our LB positions, and QB now we begin the tearing down of the Oline. We have a poor D line to start thanks to money man Mario deciding not to play with his limp wrist. How can a team get better when it tears itself apart every year. We should all be irate about Levitre. I cannot find one strength for this team...except the fans. He is a guard......and what about our RB corps? Quite a strength there if you ask me.
Bleeding Bills Blue Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 who was the last great Bills guard before Levitre? Reggie McKenzie? For all the talk about how easy it is to find a guard- the Bills have not found a good one for 30 years. Offensive line is all about continuity. And our offensive line WAS finally coming together. I think the only person more pissed about the Levitre !@#$ up is CJ Spiller Ruben Brown...?
bowery4 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 With 1400 some posts you are not new to the board but you are 100% Canadian so maybe you just don't understand the board. That is abouut the only explanation I can come up with.
Niagara Bill Posted March 13, 2013 Author Posted March 13, 2013 Has more to do w/ the $$ doled out. Talented guy, yes... but, guard is a position that can be replaced far easier than LT. True...but we had a strength and now we do not
Best Player Available Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Do we have 1 strength now????? The teams Long Snapper is dominant!
ny33 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 I have no problem with the philosophy except we have soooooo many other spots we are doing that with...ie LB and QB... (he was hurt)....Wood...opps he was hurt to....Pears....no he was hurt...Mario...ops limp wrist... Who else do you pay it to We need to pay a safety, another veteran LB, a guard, and possibly a WR. Next year, we'll probably be paying Spiller. The year after that, Dareus will be due.
nucci Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 The Bills never even contacted Levitre. They could of at least attempted to sign him. END OF STORY There were reports of talks between both parties last season. Obviously he wanted more than the Bills were willing to pay. And it's could have, not could of.

ny33 Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 True...but we had a strength and now we do not A "strength" is meaningless if it isn't part of a long-term winning foundation. Paying a guard $25 million in guarantees when you still don't have a QB is ludicrous.
Mark Vader Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Lets try this again.... Guards are a dime a dozen and should NEVER Be given huge money....ever...like throughout time. Good for andy, he suckered the Titans into overpaying a guard which is a dumb ass move for them. This is the line that gets me. A lot of people here have been saying this whenever talking about Levitre. So I will ask again, if Guards are a dime a dozen, then how come the Bills haven't had a good Guard before Levitre got to this team? Honestly, who was the last exceptional Guard on this team before Levitre? No one has been able to answer this for me.
