bbb Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I always figured the MasonDixon line of pop/soda was around Geneva, NY, and it looks like I was right:
Meathead Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 those eastern new york people are really messed up
The Poojer Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 I'm Syracuse born but raised by Buffalo born parents...pop!
eSJayDee Posted March 11, 2013 Posted March 11, 2013 If I'm referring to any carbonated soft drink, then I use "pop". If I'm referring to ice cream put in pop, then it's a soda. If it's a cola soft drink, then it CAN be referred to as a coke, much like slip-joint pliers can be referred to as Channelocks or hot tubs Jacuzzis.
bbb Posted March 11, 2013 Author Posted March 11, 2013 I'm Syracuse born but raised by Buffalo born parents...pop! Way to stay strong. I know my Syracuse friends laugh at the word pop.

HopsGuy Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 My first summer at home after spending my freshman year in Philly, I had converted to "soda". We were in a grocery store (remember Quality Markets?) getting a couple of 2-liters of pop to mix with whatever rotgot whiskey we had gotten our mitts on. One of my buddies showed up at the checkout line and said, "Hopper, we got some pop for us and this for you." He was proudly displaying a box of Arm & Hammer baking soda. Touché.
ICanSleepWhenI'mDead Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Looking at the green splotch on the color-coded map, WTF do they call it in New Mexico? The light green splotch catches the eye, but there's a nearby dark green county where over 80% call it something else. Is that Roswell, NM?
bbb Posted March 12, 2013 Author Posted March 12, 2013 New Mexico is dead to me! I didn't even notice Alaska - that's all broken up. Do the polar bears up north really call it soda??
boyst Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Looks way off here. West Virginia they call it coke or Soda. VA soda, NC almost always soda unless you hit the mountains then it could be Coke, the coast is Pepsi. My family in NY call it soda, my friends and family back in Ohio call it pop. I call it pop. I've found only older folks call it Coke now-a-days.

Wacka Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 (edited) Have to say soda so these hicks here in California get it, but as soon as I land in Buffalo, it's pop. Edited March 12, 2013 by Wacka

Jim in Anchorage Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 New Mexico is dead to me! I didn't even notice Alaska - that's all broken up. Do the polar bears up north really call it soda?? 100% soda in Anchorage.

Their refusal to call it "soda," is why I consider them !@#$s and I will never speak to them again.
