FigPatrick Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Is Pettine going to run out on the field when the ball is in the air and tell Leodis to turn around? This is comical....I guess the 6th year is the charm. Lets "unlock" him because the other 19 coaches on the NFL level that have tried to coach him are mindless and never should have been past the Pop Warner level. Why do winning franchises and fan bases in the NFL understand when a player has run his course in the NFL and it seems as if the Bills FO and our fan base hold on for an extra 3 years trying to force situations? (Merriman, Fitzpatrick (never should have been a starter), etc, etc, etc).
QCity Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I guess the 6th year is the charm. Actually he turned it around last year, he looked very good in coverage when he took over for Williams. Also it's a bit disingenuous to imply that he's been playing for 5 years - I doubt he's even had 2 full seasons worth of starts at CB.
papazoid Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 impact player as a kick returner. solid nickel db, still has upside as possible starting left corner. having said that, my priority would have been to use that money towards levitre. levitre on the field for 60 plays, mckelvin as a kr & nickel might get 30 plays a game.
San Jose Bills Fan Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Actually, it's about half way between starter money and kick returner money. I was very disappointed with special teams last year because of the rules change of allowing kickers to spot the ball 10 yds further down the field. No one is bringing the ball out when it it is kicked deep into the endzone on every freakin' kickoff. That rule hurt the Bills big time last year. It also decreases the value of a great return specialist. Well at least punt returns aren't impacted. And to add to that, in college 7 of McKelvin's 8 TD returns were punt returns.

Though I think it a bit disingenuous to imply that because a player(particularly a DB) doesn't start, that he doesn't get playing time. McKelvin has had 64 games of playing time. Like most things, it's likely somewhere in between.

That being said, McKelvin is certainly a fine NFL player, with excellent kick return skills and average CB skills. He doesn't get interceptions or deflections like "star CBs," but he's not a horrible CB against average receivers (though he tends to get smoked by big, skilled WRs). He certainly is worth 7.5m guaranteed over four years for his return skills alone.

Dibs Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 3) Here's Devin Hester's contract: http://www.spotrac.c...s/devin-hester/ The link is a little ambiguous as it includes all of his possible escalators in the total & average value of the contract. Even so.....his average salary(from another site) is 5.5m/year......which still makes McKelvin's contract look good in comparison.
DDD Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 I would rather the Bills have used this money to sign Levitre. Frankly, this makes no sense to me. He has been benched over each of the last five years by different coaching staffs because he is not a starting caliber CB. Re-signing a CB who is not a starter for $5 million per year versus a starting near Pro Bowl caliber LG for $7 or 8 million per year? This is a microcosm of why the Bills have not made the playoffs in 13 years. +1

Bufcomments Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 @alexmarvez The #Billshave re-signed CB/returner Leodis McKelvin to a four-year, $20M contract. Glad they got it done
Meathead Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 frankly im still mad at mcnumbnuts for holding the ball like a loaf of bread and not not going down like he was hit by buckshot when the first cheater got within five yards of him, but ... he really was quite good in coverage last season when he played cb, he was suddenly like a different player. im a little nervous that he might revert if given the job again full time, but as long as he can keep playing like he did last season im thrilled to have back that play im still mad at him about could be the dumbest thing ive ever seen on a bills team (leon lett holds the honor for the dumbest play in nfl history trying to recover a kick) but im willing to forget that if he lives up to or exceeds this contract. ok i wont forget but i will forgive. ok i might not forgive but i wont bring it up. ok i might bring it up but ill not whoop his ass if i ever meet him
Tcali Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 5 mil for a KR/PR???-- good Lord....Your Buffalo Bills in action
Dibs Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 (edited) FA QBs suck Mclovin sucks Troy smith sucks Warmack sucks Not exactly a crusade......but surely this sort of spam posting needs policing? Edited March 10, 2013 by Dibs
BoozeCruise Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Put this in the Kawika Mitchell pile. Why not wait around for the market to tell McKelvin what he's worth? His agent must have bluffed ol Buff. Agents must love dealing with these guys. Underachieve for a few years? Here's 7.5 guaranteed young man! He makes Wes Welker's quick-cutting moves look like they're done on rollerblades. And he's in clogs. Seems like a team with money to burn and the realization that we cannot lure free agents to come here. That money would sit a lot better with me if it were directed towards Mr. Goldson's pocket. Or perhaps Monsieur Landry's? Not an inspired choice here, gang.
QCity Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 That money would sit a lot better with me if it were directed towards Mr. Goldson's pocket. Goldson plays FS. But at least you didn't whine about Levitre, so you got that going for ya.
nucci Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 5 mil for a KR/PR???-- good Lord....Your Buffalo Bills in action Only $7.5M guaranteed. Everyone should just relax. It's not a big contract.
....lybob Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Only $7.5M guaranteed. Everyone should just relax. It's not a big contract. exactly, as I said in a previous post, most contracts are heavily backloaded, Mckelvin's actual cap numbers might be something like 2.5 mil, 4mil, 6mil and 7.5mil with him unlikely seeing that last year
8-8 Forever? Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 @alexmarvez The #Billshave re-signed CB/returner Leodis McKelvin to a four-year, $20M contract. \Amazing after 3 years of buddy how many gaping holes this team has. LB, QB, WR. amazing. This team will never be any good. By the time these holes are filled , the lineman will have left in FA. sucks to be a Bills fan. Hope RGIII is recovered for next season. Go Redskins, or Warriors, or toothpicks, or whatever they will be called.
