Special K Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Just wondering if swapping draft picks as part of a trade for a player is allowable by the NFL. For example, could the Bills and 49'ers swap 2nd round picks (pick 41 for pick 62) in exchange for Alex Smith? I don't want this to turn into an Alex Smith thread, just wondering if something like this is possible. I can't think of anthing like this done in the past......maybe it just hasn't been done because its not a very good idea. Anybody have any thoughts on this?
Mark Vader Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Trades that involve a team trading down for a draft pick and a player while only giving up one draft pick have happened before, just not that often. Also the players involved in such trades are generally low-end players. So a trade like this involving Alex Smith seems highly doubtful.
section122 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Matt Schaub was involved in a deal like this. Texans and falcons swapped I believe the 8th and 10th pick. Iirc the texans threw in another pick or two. I'm on my phone or I'd provide a link...
JPS Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 The Seahawks acquired Charlie Whitehurst by swapping their high 2nd round pick with SD's low 2nd rounder.
