Beerball
That's pretty nasty. Interesting place to dump a body; you'd have to think someone killed her in the hotel. Otherwise why risk dragging a body to that bizarre spot. And if she was on her way to Santa Cruz, why did she stop and spend several nights in a seedy hotel in LA? Ever been to Santa Cruz? That entire place is seedy. (or was the last time I was there)
NoSaint
That YouTube video is weird, strange and absolutely creepy. At first it looks like she's hiding from someone. Creeped out maybe. A possibility she met someone that maybe drugged her and she was trying to get away from them. Or maybe she was just high. Or just weird. Very strange story. Disgusting. And one creepy video. That some ghost type s*#t right there. watching it there are a few things - the door starts to close after she hits the button but immediately re-opens. either someone(possibly her) hit the door hold, or theres a chance that the sensor were dirty, something on the track etc... that mightve hung it up. she was really slow and laid back initially hitting it so i dont think that she was "on the run" at this point. from there it looks like she jumps to a reaction along the lines of thinking theres a ghost in the doorway. it never seems like theres an outside person though. strange at best. i really dont think there was someone there though. Best Player Available
Ever been to Santa Cruz? That entire place is seedy. (or was the last time I was there) Last I checked "seedy" can be used for about any town in the USA because of drug problems. But if Santa Cruz is considered seedy, then surfer dudes and hot college chicks have a new ID. KD in CA
Ever been to Santa Cruz? That entire place is seedy. (or was the last time I was there) We stopped in SC for dinner at a local Mexican dive while driving the PCH a few years ago. You can't get good Mexican without going seedy! stevestojan
By the way, and I know it's certainly late to say this now as I posted this, I didn't mean to downplay her death with the fantastical "grossness" of the story. I certainly hope, if not for anything else, her death was painless and if this was a homicide they find the responsible party. I guess I just went for the "gross" factor and maybe I shouldn't have. It's terribly gross. If it wasnt the first thing in your head, THAT would be the strange thing.
truth on hold
watching it there are a few things - the door starts to close after she hits the button but immediately re-opens. either someone(possibly her) hit the door hold, or theres a chance that the sensor were dirty, something on the track etc... that mightve hung it up. she was really slow and laid back initially hitting it so i dont think that she was "on the run" at this point. from there it looks like she jumps to a reaction along the lines of thinking theres a ghost in the doorway. it never seems like theres an outside person though. strange at best. i really dont think there was someone there though. But hitting door hold doesn't keep it open that long after you release it. Typically it closes almost immediately thereafter. I think either some kind of operator box was open and she hit a maintenance switch, or someone remotely kept it open (that someone being the person she felt was stalking her?). I don't think it was malfunction or there'd have been a lot of complaints and it likely would not have closed at all. *I think* since I'm not an expert. Its also a bit odd the police and news services have not commented on the elevators atypical performance. Its also a bit odd the police and news services have not commented on the elevators atypical performance. Well... I kind of put some of my every day well maintained elevator experience on the side and took a swing that an elevator in a crack den, hourly motel in LA may act up in odd ways. I'm also not an elevator expert. And it's possible it acted up regularly - guests complained about the water for weeks without response. Hell, the place was still checking people in after they found her floating and just gave a casual disclaimer to avoid the water for a bit. Crack house with what looks like a cracked out girl running around.... I'm leaving it wide open til we get some cause of death.

Did she have friends? The place is a dump... Why the heck are Brits and Canadian tourists being attracted to this place? The British couple spent 8 days there... Holy good God. What were they slumming? The Holiday Inn too expensive? Wow... Edited February 26, 2013 by ExiledInIllinois

Fan in San Diego
Ever been to Santa Cruz? That entire place is seedy. (or was the last time I was there) I've spent some time in Santa Cruz. It's got some pretty amazing coastal views and locations. Inland is pretty as well. You must have been slumming it on your visit.

ExiledInIllinois
Hey bbb... I just find it odd. If we came from 1/2 way around the world and I said to my wife and two kids: "Hey we are in LA, this is where (The Cecil) we are staying... Ain't it great!" They would murder me and I'd be the one in that water tank. I don't usually get the yips when it comes to hotels... BUT COME ON! If I was tight on scratch and it had to come down to this place or not see LA, I guess I wouldn't see LA! Anyway, you'd think those Brit tourists would have made up for the low rates a little and splurged on the Aquafina. Heck, I don't think I drink the tap water in a normal hotel! LoL.. Wow... They must be hardcore tourists! Some tough SOB's! LoL.. What were they doing for their holiday... Taking a tour of Watts or Compton? :-O Also, I gave The Cecil a quick Google search... Seems it bills itself as a European style hotel, maybe that is why they stayed there. The scary part (and I am a cheap ass) is that it seems rooms start @ 55 bucks a night... Oh my, that is low for downtown LA, low for any major city in this country! My God! Anybody check out the slate.com article on the 6 ways to tell if you are staying @ a murder hotel? LoL.. Just Jack
Death of Tourist in Hotel Water Tank Ruled Accidental Drowning The death of a Canadian tourist whose body was found in a rooftop water tank at a downtown Los Angeles hotel was ruled accidental due to drowning, according to the Los Angeles County coroner. The report released Thursday in the death of Elisa Lam also lists "bipolar disorder" under other significant conditions. The 21-year-old's body was discovered when a maintenance worker was inspecting the tanks Feb. 19 atop the Cecil Hotel.
