buffalobillsgrl Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Finally! Coach Marrone came out today and said there would be open competition at all positions. While i know this is usually the case for new coaching staffs, I also think this should be the case every year! Every year these players should be told straight forward you are all competing for a job, no one is safe, lets get to it! I can not wait to see who steps up and who REALLY wants to be here.
shibuya Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 it didn't even need to be said. I assumed Marrone would do exactly that
buffalobillsgrl Posted February 15, 2013 Author Posted February 15, 2013 it didn't even need to be said. I assumed Marrone would do exactly that It is good that he did tho......maybe there are some guys that need to hear exactly those words directly from the coach. Just because most of us assumed it would be the case dosen't mean all of the players would take it seriously. So I am glad he came out and said it
benderbender Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 it didn't even need to be said. I assumed Marrone would do exactly that You would think so, but Fitz's job was secure for the past two seasons. If there was a camp competition, it wasn't obvious. There is an off chance that competition might bring out the fighter in Fitz that supposedly he possibly has... perchance...mayhaps.
White Linen Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Finally! Coach Marrone came out today and said there would be open competition at all positions. Totally overrated statement. Do you think it's possible Stevie Johnson could be second string? The only thing this means is they don't think the starter is good enough to have the starting job, if that position is QB, you're in trouble.
Maury Ballstein Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 nice to see uncle sy has made it, JACK This competition will interest me when the 3rd party to this open competition is named Smith, Barkley, Wilson or Manuel.
The Senator Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 (edited) I just hope it will be a genuine "open competition" as opposed to the ersatz 'open competition' that Chan Gailey ran where, despite Gailey's lip service to the contrary, the job was clearly Trent Edwards' to lose. (And, once the regular season began, Trent did just that - lose the job after two games, thus wasting QB expert Chan Gailey's 6 months of OTA/mini-camp/training camp/and preseason open competition and evaluation) I wonder if Brad Smith will also be part of this competition, and will we throw our 1st-round pick Matt Barkley into the mix? Any chance of Tebow coming here as a TE/#3 QB??? GO BILLSSS!!!! 19 and 0 baby!!!!! . Edited February 15, 2013 by The Senator

The point of the post wasn't as much what he said as it was that he said it publicly. In three years did Chan say anything to the effect? It just feels like a whole different approach. Maybe Marrone won't be so player friendly,. To see actual competition and guys being forced to fight for their jobs is refreshing to me...assuming that it really happens. Or maybe my eternal optimism is just kicking in again. Who knows? But it is fun to dream that Marrone is going to come in and completely light a fire under our guys
Delete This Account Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 what coach doesn't preach competition. ... of course, Fitzpatrick vs. Jackson is one thing. Mario Williams vs. ? is another, right? jw

Don't any one fear that we won't be very serious about getting a QB within the first two rounds. Also and important , i can see him kicking anyone to the curb anytime. KOKBILLS Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 If Ryan Fitzpatrick is part of your QB competition...You're not good enough... /the end

Dibs Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I always wonder what prompts people to say the things they say.....in this case....why did Marrone say.... “I spoke with Ryan (Fitzpatrick) and Tarvaris (Jackson) and told them we will have an open competition at the quarterback position – similar to what we will do at all positions on our team heading into our offseason work,” said Marrone. “I believe that our players will embrace this challenge. We are looking forward to working with our players as we prepare for the 2013 season.” It doesn't sound like it was part of a pre written press release......which implies that it was a direct response to a question......likely about who will be the starting QB. I'm wondering if there is any other possible response that he could have given at this time......and if not, doesn't it make the comment totally meaningless?

Thurmal34 Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 (edited) what coach doesn't preach competition. ... of course, Fitzpatrick vs. Jackson is one thing. Mario Williams vs. ? is another, right? jw Difference being if Williams gets beat out at LDE, his primary position, odds are he will beat someone else out at RDE. If, god forbid, he gets beat out at RDE, there's always OLB. There are four possible positions for him to play before being relegated to the bench. For Fitz or Jackson, not so much Edited February 16, 2013 by Thurmal34
#34fan Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I've been calling for competition at every position for two years... I sure hope Marrone means it... No special treatment, or immunity for any player. -EARN your roster spot. Very exciting to hear... We'll see how it applies to the QB position.
WhitewalkerInPhilly Posted February 16, 2013 Posted February 16, 2013 I am excited to hear it. My one concern is that I fail to understand the appeal of competition where the losers still take up incredible amounts of cap space. Fitz is set to make 10 mil, even if most of his cap space is dead money now, and TJax got 4.5 million. That pretty much undoes all of the money we got back from Barnett, Wilson and McGee.
