I thought this was common knowledge, but I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in the thread. After a series of on field deaths, football was actually almost banned early in the 20th century. Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton, setup a commission led by Teddy Roosevelt that led to a series of rule changes that make the game safer.

Once they outlawed the Flying Wedge, they pretty much eliminated the fatalities.

ive said this before. not sure the nfl stands the test of time. it starts with the lawsuits. depending on how those go and the sport progresses, it will be an impossible game to ensure for local school districts, townships, and possibly even some mid sized state level schools across the country. the trend will pick up steam, the college game will be a dozen teams, eliminating the nfl and just cycling through athletes every 4 years rather than these prolonged bashings. eventually the sport will die.
