NFL has considered widening the playing field 35 feet, and reportedly may revisit the idea

The NFL reportedly might consider widening the playing field to Canadian Football League standards, a drastic idea that would be one of the bigger rules changes the game has seen in a long time – if it comes to pass. The National Football Post reported that the league has talked about widening the field sideline-to-sideline from 160 feet to 195 feet, which is the CFL standard, and the league might look into the idea again this offseason.

Now. If they can just get the NHL to make the slab of ice bigger, maybe safety won't be such an issue. Not saying that to hijack things but, widening the football field, will that lead to a bit more safety with impacts?

EDIT: Just read the article... I guess they are thinking the same about safety.

As long as they put 12 players on the field, otherwise NO.

What I think they should do is eliminate illegal formations except for having 5 lineman on the line.

Also have multiple players in motion and holding on run plays only five yards.

college rules for the passing game.

Unlimited motion in the backfield? Rouges? Poutine stands?

what are those?

And how do they plan to do this with EVERY field in the entire league not available to make the switch?

The Ralph couldn't add 35 more feet of room. The players in the sidelineS would be 5 rows deep into the stands.

Not gonna happen.

My thought also....

Or maybe build a new stadium?

not every team is primed to build a new stadium. Or make those major types of upgrades. You think Jerry Jones would ever allow his "Baby" to be changed. Prolly never gonna happen. In fact, with Dallas, they can make that change because there is seating below field level on the end zone corners.

I think Foxboro (not sure) has a stairway downstairs right off the field. That's a lot of changes for a weak ass 35 feet for no reason. The game is fine the way it is.

Looking at a few other "recently" built stadiums, I'm not sure they could also do a wider field....

yup. Not a chance in hell the $Billion NJ stadium has enough room to accommodate that change. And there's even less of a chance in hell that the upgrades would be covered to make the necessary changes.

About the best the NFL could do, is male it mandatory that any new stadiums be built with additional room for these types of future possibilities. Of course, it would take 30 years to make this all happen anyway.

The way you would do it is to not go all the way to the Canadian dimensions.

To do so would be Draconian anyways. That's why it would never happen.

Now if you tried selling that you would widen the field by 2 yards (one yard on each sideline), you might find it more feasible to sell to players and fans and also you wouldn't have problems accommodating the new field dimensions in existing stadiums.

It doesn't seem like much but we're talking about and additional 2160 square feet. In a game of inches.

I've often thought that if the NHL wanted to increase scoring that they could simply increase the size of the goal by just a few inches.

I believe the extra room would have a significant effect on the game, more than most people would believe.

I think they should add dome skyboxes above the field, all with glass floors so you can watch the game looking down.

Players would be easy to distract just have female guests go pantyless.
