Winning the Super Bowl is going to cost the Ravens (like every other winner). Beside Joe Flacco, there is Ray Rice, Ed Reed, Paul Kruger, Dennis Pitta, Bernard Pollard and Bryant McKinney who contributed greatly to the playoff run but their contracts are up. I don't envy Ozzie Newsome and Baltimore management it trying to balance a successful formula in building a team and satisfying players request for more money.

Bernard Pollard is signed through 2015, Rice is signed through 2017, didn't check the rest.

McKinney did add to that line, but highly doubt he would command major dollars in free agency. He'll get a bump, but that is about it.

He wants $100 mil over 5 years with $40 mil guaranteed.

I know it's a QB driven league and all, but $20 mil puts a real burden on a team already struggling to retain its talent. Is he worth it? Is it a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario? Do they have a strong enough supporting cast to win with an Alex Smith type?

YES !!...in a heartbeat....at this point, it would be good for the Bills to offer Flacco 5yr/$100mil/$50 guaranteed....even if it meant losing two First round draft choices.

Remember when Bryant McKinnie was over the Hill and a waste fo space...like in 2008? That was the consenous on this board at least!

McKinnie quieted those comments with his play this season. He looked good in the playoffs. New team must have done wonders for him.

Very negative around here. I questioned about taking Aaron Williams before Dalton after their first year and got shredded. I presume these were the same people claiming we should not draft a QB last few years because it would be a waste and nobody in the draft was worthy of a pick. Know it alls who know s__t.

In what way is supporting the team's decisions "negative?"

And there were plenty of people who didn't like the Aaron Williams pick.

Baltimore rolled the dice by not giving him a long term deal last year. They lost the bet and now they must pay. He is a super bowl winning quarterback and did it in MVP style. I think he is worth close to that. He produced, you rolled the dice, now pay the man.

BTW- Stevie - i could work harder- johnson contract was nearly 37 million for 5 years with close to 20 million guaranteed. Given that he has never been to a playoff game and is not a quarterback - I think Flaco is a bargain at that price!

What makes Flacco any different than the top qbs in the league. He's won playoff games in each of his first 5 years and is now in a superbowl. His overall numbers are above average. Btw he's the only qb in NFL history to win playoff games in his first 5 years. How exactly is he "not elite"? Because he didn't do it sooner? So I guess in that case Eli is also "not elite". Hell how long did it take Peyton to get to a superbowl? Flacco has been nothing short of outstanding this postseason and has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. He's worth the money for a guy who's only 27 years old. He's basically been a better version of Roethlisberger and he'll probably stay healthier cause he doesn't take the amount of unnecessary hits Ben has taken

The only other guys I would take ahead of him at this time would be: Luck, Kappernick, Possibly RG111 Newton or Wilson but I would have to think long and hard about it. Those guys are coming up Flacco is prime time now and he will be for years.

We paid 100M to Mario with 50M Guaranteed...If we really get a shot at that # you quoted, we should be jumping on that....All the elite QBs make 20 to 23M per year. 40 Guaranteed in my opinion is pretty low.

Couldn't agree more. That Mario contract is the laughingstock of the NFL.

Long time cap specialist and contract negotiator for the Packers Adrew Brandt was on Sirius NFL radio this morning. He said that he would be suprised if the Ravens used the exclusive rights franchise tag on Flacco since it results in the tag number being higher. He said the that the Ravens would probably be safe using the normal franchise tag, then matching if they needed to. If the Ravens do this, I think the bills should offer Flacco a huge contract loaded with the "poison pills" that are still legal. The bills could for example, front load the contract since the Raven are in bad shape with their salary cap when you consider the other players they need to re-sign. I would not miss the two first round picks the bills would have to give up at all. Sure, the next two April's would not be that exciting, but every Sunday would be much better.

The Ravens have cap issues and may not apply the Exclusive Franchise Player Tag on Flacco.

Should the non-exclusive scenario play out, do you advocate the Bills giving Flacco a big offer that would be difficult to match and ultimately giving up two #1 picks?

Personally, I'd entertain it. But it isn't my money. A sure thing QB is worth the two #1s though. Bird in the hand etc etc.
