ny33 Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 (edited) I always find the pro bowl is laughable argument to be much more laughable. The Pro Bowl has, what, 80 players in it? Each year, IMO, 70 of the 80 definitely deserve to go, there are 5 that are very arguable (because equal players may have deserved to go, but if they were flopped it may have been just as unfair to the first guy) and about 5 players are "laughable." Every year, especially the starters, about are 90% deserving (unless you want to nitpick an argument over whether Peyton Manning should start over Tom Brady or vice versa where there is no definitive answer whatsoever). Of course the majority of the starters are deserving, but the fact remains that All-Pros are a far better indicator of elite players in the league. If casual fans are mislead into thinking that Jeff Saturday is an elite center, the Pro Bowl has failed to recognize talent. In particular, the Pro Bowl fails when it comes to offensive line and cornerback talent, where most fans generally don't know how to measure elite play. Nose tackles, 3-4 ends, and 4-3 OLBs also fail to get recognition because those positions, generally, don't put up flashy numbers like sacks. Edited January 22, 2013 by ny33
Dorkington Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Pretty pathetic that we can't even get a player on the real team. Have to depend on being an alternate to the actual good players. Hopefully one of these years we'll become relevant again. Congrats to our players who are good enough to be replacements for the stars.

That can't be argued. And I wasn't necessarily attacking you for saying that, I say it every year here. 90% of pro bowl players are well deserving of the pro bowl, and are at or very near the top of the league at their positions, and yet every year people come out and say what a joke it is because 2-3 players out of 80 or so are a joke, as if it means nothing, and anyone named to the team is a joke. Plus the fans only account for one third of the vote, and two thirds are players and coaches.
BuffaloWest Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 When guys like Byrd and Spiller get into a Pro Bowl, even as a second choice, it adds the tag "Pro Bowler" Jarius Byrd to their identity, and drives up their asking price at the worst possible time for a team like Buffalo who is trying to re-sign the guy. Byrd really isnt an All Pro. He is a second choice Truth be told ,it is like asking the hottest girl to the dance, having her reject you for a hotter guy,and then you have to settle for someone not as hot...That is Byrd,Williams and Spiller (although not so much in Spiller) Williams wont even play -will he? He has that bad achilles (He better not play!) Byrd will be gone this offseason..All he has to do is look at guy's like Whitner and Marshawn and just know there are waaay better options to get paid and win out there. We are starting over here-so it is really no different than starting with a new team...If that isnt enough-all he has to do is ask Stevie-who will tell him:"Dude-RUN!"
BillsFan-4-Ever Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I heard the following - Spiller, defensive tackle Kyle Williams and safety Jairus Byrd all will represent the Bills in the Pro Bowl on Sunday, the NFL announced. They were named to the AFC roster to replace three Baltimore Ravens, who will be playing in the Super Bowl. I might watch some of it.
