Is having Mike as a first name a prerequisite to being an NFL coach?

Recommended Posts

The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article today where they cited the fact that almost 20% of the head coaches in the NFL are named Mike . Here is a link to a short online version-> link

However, statistically speaking, Mike is not the most common name in the US. It is actually James based on Census information. Yet, there are only 2 Jims who are head coaches in the NFL right now --which is just 6%. What can a James do to get a fair shot in the NFL?

Really, though, we're down from our glory days. There was a time a name like this would get Mike Tice a head coaching job in this league, and have Mike Sherman knocking on the door of the Super Bowl. It even got Mike Holmgren a Vince Lombardi Trophy.

You gotta earn it now, like everyone else. Mike Tomlin has to bring it.
