Redskins Name Change

  1. 1. Should the "Redskins" name be changed?

    • Yes. It's a derogatory word and the NFL should set a good example.
    • No. It's not derogatory to most people and changing it would set a bad example.
    • Maybe. I don't have a strong opinion but I wouldn't be fazed by a name change.
  2. 2. How many of the following statements capture your views?

    • It's insensitive to have a team name that denotes skin color.
    • I'm deeply offended; it's borderline bigotry.
    • It's a politically-correct manufactured controversy.
    • Another example of a select "offended" few forcing their PC views on everyone.
    • The term doesn't bother me but it is offensive to many others.
    • I value tradition in this debate.
    • Why is this even an issue?

Macho guys? Native Americans?

This guy (far left) has no issue with the DC football team name....

What do the New England Patriots* fan club have to do with poll?

Just because the guy on the left dresses up like some Boston Tea Party participant does not relate to thread.

Redskins Hall of Famers say team should consider name change: http://tracking.si.c...er-name-change/

http://www.wtop.com/...in-on-team-name

Pro Football Hall of Famers, wide receiver Art Monk and cornerback Darrell Green, said that the team should talk about the controversy and consider a name change.

Monk, who set an NFL record for most catches in a season with 106 and helped lead the Redskins to three Super Bowl victories, says the team should consider a name change.

"[if] Native Americans feel like Redskins or the Chiefs or [another] name is offensive to them, then who are we to say to them 'No, it's not'?" Monk says.

At what point does this qualify as crusading?

How about a new name first? I stopped calling them by that racist moniker about a year ago.

They've had the name for a while. What took you so long to stop using it?

Because you never really think about things like that when it's a nationally renowned sports franchise. It's not something that crosses your mind until it's pointed out to you. That name is 100% racist, without a doubt.

You're that sensitive about it and yet it needed to be pointed out to you after decades of use?

The majority of Native Americans don't even consider it to be an offensive team name. See link

It is considered racist by pretentious and overly PC individuals like YOU, DStebb716.

i dont remember - is this the guy the redskins interviewed on one of their tv shows that claimed to be a chief but turned out just to be some convicted felon that was like a quarter native american and had no ties to any tribe?

or did they find a legit guy for this one?

Well then PETA would be all over them for making the canvas of the dome out of animal skin. Gotta keep it authentic.

Edit: And on the team name front...this is the only one that I think we can be pretty united is unreasonable. Indians, Braves, etc fall near the Buccaneers, Cowboys, Rangers category, and aren't inherently offensive in themselves. The Washington football team however chooses a racist pejorative that borders on the N-word, and to me remains a negative mark on the franchise and the NFL.

LOL. I guess it's true what they say, "if you live long enough, you'll see (or hear) just about everything." You may have missed what was pointed out just a few posts above yours.....a MAJORITY of Indians don't even think it's offensive. Political correctness, and the feeling of "that's offensive to me", has made this country a much worse place than it used to be.

ETA: Notwithstanding the linked article in this forum showing that Indians are OK with "Redskins", there have been many other polls showing the same thing too. OBVIOUSLY, if "Redskins" was anywhere near to as offensive as "the N word", the name would have been changed LONG ago.

Dismissing an argument by simply labeling it as "politically correct" is without a doubt the laziest way to actually challenge a position. Yet judging from this board, the tactic is quite popular.

Okay here is a more formal "scientific study" for you. Included is the methodology, sampling error, etc.

Damn libs...

If there's one thing I hate, it's "Majority" individuals trying to be the voice of the Minority, instead of letting the minority individual speak for himself.

Interestingly, I never said that Native Americans were opposed to the name. Rather, I implied that relying on an anecdote to make a statistically significant point wasn't really acceptable. The Annenberg survey is certainly acceptable -- they're an excellent organization. I wonder how much has changed since the poll was taken in 2004, however. As far as I can tell, no credible polls have been taken in the last year or two. Maybe the numbers will be the same as before, but perhaps not give the increasing degree of controversy surrounding the name.
