Actually there is no need.

 

That's why hard reporting is dying.

 

For all intents and purposes, John Clayton really could live in his Mom's basement.

 

Hard reporting isn't dying, it's changing along with all media. Reporters did the hard leg work back in the day because access to information was different.

 

But let's compare last week's events to a coaching search in ... 1978. Do you think that the fans got more timely and better information over the last week, or during the week Bills hired Chuck Knox? Yet that was the time when reporters did the hard work.

 

Not a fair comparison, I know, but the biggest reason the sports reporters' job is different now is because the sports they cover are different. More access is granted to media now because it builds up the sport. The leagues recognize it and grant access.

 

You're right, Clayton may never leave the basement to give us the scoop. But does he really have to for these routine stories? And for what benefit? To beat his competitors by one half hour on a rumor that Bills interviewed Coach X?

 

This is not the story where reporters should be wasting scarce energy and budget on.
