Big Turk Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I found a few sites that calculate "Air Yards", which are the number of yards a QB throws a ball in the air and doesn't count YAC yards for the receiver. Well, this year, Fitz was 37th in the NFL in "Air Yards per completion" with 4.95...meaning the average distance his passes traveled in the air per completion was 4.95 yards. So the stats back up exactly what our eyes told us...the ball rarely traveled very far downfield for his completions... A very surprising name was 38th, directly below Fitz, and that was Phillip Rivers, coming in at 4.93... Nick Foles was 38th at 4.88 and Christian Ponder was dead last in 40th place at a paltry 4.07... Top 5: Colin Kaepernick 8.07 Andrew Luck 7.80 Eli Manning 7.75 Mark Sanchez 7.55 Josh Freeman 7.47 Edited January 6, 2013 by matter2003
sodbuster Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Imo, Kaep has too small of a sample size, but that takes nothing away from the point of this. I'm just knitpicking because I have nothing better to do.
Green Lightning Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Do they calculate "error" yards? The distance the ball travels without any hope of being caught? Fitz would be a leader there I think.

All this says is that Fitz in gGiley's offense relied on the receivers abilities to gain YAC. In a spread screen offense, it is to be expected that "air yards/ attempt" would be low. Montana, Starr, Unitas, Kelly, Elway... they wouldn't have high "air yards" either in such an offense.
Over 29 years of fanhood Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I am not sure what this proves. If the play call is a screen pass that's the call no matter who the QB is.
Green Lightning Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 72 ounce steak in 49 minutes That's just crackerdogs. In 49 minutes? You saw Mark Sanchez play this year didnt you? Fair point.
Big Turk Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 (edited) I am not sure what this proves. If the play call is a screen pass that's the call no matter who the QB is. It shows the relatively ineffectiveness of his deep passing attempts, and also the lack of deep passing attempts Edited January 6, 2013 by matter2003
filthymcnasty08 Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 The sooner we look past Fitz, the faster we become a better team. He's awful, let it go.
Hapless Bills Fan Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I found a few sites that calculate "Air Yards", which are the number of yards a QB throws a ball in the air and doesn't count YAC yards for the receiver. Linkies, please?
John Cocktosten Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 All these advanced metrics mean nothing. Simply put, Fitz should not be a starter in the NFL.
Big Turk Posted January 6, 2013 Author Posted January 6, 2013 Linkies, please? the links would be for Air Yards per attempt, which I then took and turned into air yards per completion, which gives a better picture of completed passes...
The Dog Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 Anybody track the passes that we're on target but not caught, through the hands?
JESSEFEFFER Posted January 6, 2013 Posted January 6, 2013 I suspect that the Bills screen game would impact negatively on this stat. Run the same numbers for those passes completed to TEs and WRs and then compare.
