sjjr
Everyone seems to agree that this team is better, talent wise, than three years ago when Buddy came in. The potential is there to have some of the best offensive and defensive lines in the NFL. There are also some nice pieces like Spiller, Stevie and Gilmore to build around from a skill position stand point. The main reason the Bills are 5-10 is because they don't have enough playmakers in key situations. They have one of the worst turnover differentials in the league, bad in the red zone on both sides of the ball, bad on 3rd down conversions and particularly bad at the "details" that make great teams great. They could realistically make the following moves to turn these things around. -Fire Chan, Promote Wannestedt and hire Norv Turner as O.Coordinator. This gives them continuity but some change in message that is needed for fans and players. -Resign Byrd, Levitre, K.Moore and McIntire. Signing more depth at DT wouldn't hurt. Cut Barnett and let B.Scott walk. -They are terrible in nickel coverage with Barnett, Scott and Justin Rogers. All three of these players need to be replaced. Draft Alec Ogletree (or someone like him) at LB in the 1st or 2nd round who can play all 3 downs and can do it all athletically. Allow Bradham to play nickel backer because Shep is clearly a 2 down MLB. Find a free agent like Grimes, Munnerlyn or Mouton at nickel corner. -The base defense can be good with this personnel. They need to get a year older and more experienced mostly. Allowing Searcy to start at SS seems to make sense now. If they can play more zone that would fit A.Williams skill set at CB rather than man every down. More zone will also add some mystery to the defense for opposing QBs, especially mobile ones like Tannehill and R.Wilson. -QB is the obvious problem and an upgrade is necessary. Drafting a guy like Aaron Murray (Geno Smith if he's there) in the 1st or 2nd round to compete with a free agent and the current QBs might work. Another problem is that the Bills have only one guy who can consistently beat man coverage and that's Stevie. A second WR or TE who can do that would really help on 3rd down. There could be some free agent TEs and they could draft a guy like DaRick Rogers or Cobi Hamilton in the round 3-4. If they could just be even in turnover differential and average on 3rd downs and red zone opportunities, they could be a playoff team. A couple playmakers on defense to force more turnovers and some clutch players on offense could make the difference they need to be 10-5 at this time next year as opposed to 5-10. There is little probability they will blow this up by firing Nix and going to a 3-4 defense for instance. They are paying a guy $100 million who wants to play in a 4-3 and Buddy is clearly their pick for football operations. I think he can get it done and turned around in the next two years... Mr. WEO
They are more talented but lack "playmakers at key positions"? Make Wanny HC??

Dragonborn10
Wanny is one of the biggest problems with this team. We knew the LB's and WR's were awful. Now we know the game has passed Wanny by. This team has too much invested in the DL to switch back to a 3-4. We need up and coming coordinators to bring new life and energy to this place. Jay Gruden for HC/OC!
Maury Ballstein
Put this in the running with "Mario for skelton" and "Russell Wilson will never be good" Wanny HC and flailing Norv ? No thanks. New blood time.
Bangarang
How to set this team back even more: 1. Promote Wanny 2. Drastically reach for Murray in the 1st round. Just terrible stuff right there
Over 29 years of fanhood
Wandstedt got everything a d coach could ask for... Pro bowl DT, second year #3 pick next to him. Mario Williams and Mark Anderson brining multiple 10+ seasons to the team. A first round pick on a db, decent FS, another high pick on a decent LB and so on... The fact that the defense has been so bad this season with this roster is unacceptable. How on earth does that justify promotion?
Dr. Trooth
This plan is ridiculous, stupid, & a huge step backward. But, exactly the type of move that Ralph would make and Brandon would pitch... and could easily lure 40,000 stupid Bills fans to buy season tix. Pirate Angel
Wanny like Chan had never been a good HC anywhere...He just displayed one of the worst defenses of all time as DC ( wasnt it a record setting # of 50+ points scored on a unit in a season?) yes now is the time to promote him

ganesh
Make Bobby April as our HC. He can motivate this team into a top team (like he did with his special teams) and he may be available due to the crap in Philadelphia. I don't think this team is close enough as you suggest, they have strong weakness at QB, WR, TE, LB, CB, SS. What is the likelihood of filling all this with the draft and FA. It makes it worse when they have to fill up slots for getting rid of veterans such as Kelsay, Barnett.
KeisterHollow
Sorry, but although I agree with you that our talent is good in most places, and merely lacking in a few critical places, I do not think keeping the status quo with the coaching staff is a good idea. Drafting a QB and LB 1 and 2 makes sense, adding another QB, LB, and WR in the rounds to follow, or in F.A., makes sense, too. But, we need the right coach in here - and we need those top picks to pan out. This team with GOOD coaching, a hot rookie QB, and a star at MLB would be MUCH improved. All attainable; its just a matter of whether or not the top of the organization wants it enough.

frogger
Jay Gruden for HC, we've seen him develop a young QB, I believe he is a better coach than his brother. He isn't gailey. Zimmer for DC if he's willing to leave with gruden, if not him, Mark Carrier, also with the Bengals as DB coach but coached DL in New jersey with the jets. We are a 4-3 team, stick with it. Bring over Thomas howard and Rey M...never going to spell his name right. Both are free agents with Cincinnati, both are upgrades. When selecting a HC, oc, or dc I think we should consider who may follow.

Holy freaking cow....I stopped reading after that bolded and enlarged sentence. Man 0 man, there are just so many things i would like to say to the OP, and this post. But considering I already have 2 warnings, I'll refrain. While I agree with the fire Chan part, why on earth would the team want to promote someone who took a more talented defense then Jauron or George Edwards ever had and yet they played so much worse. Its also a running joke about how bad Dave Wannstedt has been this season and his inability to motivate his players. The players routinely miss tackles, miss their gaps, make mistakes, allow big plays. Plus, by the last game this season the defense should set a franchise record for most points allowed, second in yards allowed. They already broke NFL record in the 92+ year history of the NFL the very first team to allow a 300 yard passer and 300 yards rushing to the 49ers in their 45-3 blowout loss. Sorry Mrs Wannstedt, your husband sucks, and should be banned from coaching in the NFL.

Sisyphean Bills
Wannstedt has been here 2 yrs. First led the worst unit on the team - linebackers. Second led the worst D in team history. The only reason to promote him again after more failure is for the sake of failure continuity and to try and spread it higher and further.
