DC Tom Posted December 26, 2012 Share Posted December 26, 2012 In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts. “Too many bad memories,” he told an interviewer in 1997. “I don't want you to see me crying.” Which is kind-of too bad, because the publicly available stories of his service has him serving in some five different units on D-Day, landing in Normandy at three different times in 48 hours (with the 82nd or 101st airborne, with the 1st Infantry, and with an anti-aircraft battalion), and surviving the Malmedy massacre while simultaneously being nowhere near it. Suffice to say that all we know is: he won a Silver Star (for which I looked for but could not find the citation) and 3 Purple Hearts, and wouldn't talk about them.
